We planned our wedding in less than three months and we had a couple of freinds and family set up video cameras and do the videos we had another freind do the flowers and someone else we know came to our house (where we had our reception) and bar b qued. Most of the family brought side dishes and everyone had a blast our mothers made the bridesmaid dresses and the whole thing cost less than $1500. Everyone told mne how much fun it was and how much they liked it that we kept everything down to earth but still beautiful. People were glad to get to be a part of it instead of just showing up to watch.

Financing a wedding on a credit card is not a good idea!! As for what you "need" - a groom, two witnesses and an officiant. Everything else is just icing on the cake. Some ideas for saving money:

1. A mid afternoon or late evening wedding can be very romantic - and since no meal is necessary, a simple dessert and punch reception can save you a bundle on food.

2. Unless you have family who is musically talented - recorded music is much more affordable then live music.

3. Decorations are always optional. You want to have a pretty location - but that does not have to cost a bundle. Look for accent pieces (archways, candles, etc) that you can borrow from friends and family and concentrate only on the most visible areas: the alter, centerpieces and head table. NOTE: not everything has to be identical either. Centerpieces could be collections of candle holders in similar colors that you gather from friends, family, flea markets, etc.

4. I agree, photos are important. Look for semi professional or student photographers who have done weddings but don't do it full time: they tend to be cheaper. Also, see if you can find someone who will letyou have the negatives or a CD of digital copies so you can do your own reprints.

5. Flowers can be optional to! I have seen weddings were the wedding party carried single roses, a lantern, or just a candle instead of flowers. For the bride - a dozen roses for $20, tied with ribbon, makes a great, affordable bouquet. Buy silk, and you can make it ahead of time!

hope those ideas help:) I have lots more on my blog as well

I just got married and didnt spend a lot of money. I used a photographer that was a friend from church and she was great. She only charged me $300 for engagement pictures, bridals and the wedding. She's since gone up to $450 but even that is a bargain for all three things. I made my own ivitations and floral arrangements. I was married at 2pm so we only served desserts and they were homemade by family and friends. People will ask if they can help, so say yes, I need you to make 50 truffels, etc. I rented an arch and a few candle aubras (sp?). I made almost everything myself. I found pictures of what I like and copied it. I used silk flowers for the decorations because I decorated two days before so I'd have a break the day before and the day of. I suggest doing this if your church will allow you to. My grandmother made the cake, although you could make it yourself, or have a friend make it. Cake decorating isnt that difficult if you choose something very simple and have a steady hand. Purchasing the supplies is cheaper than $3 a slice. If you want fresh flowers, like I did for the bouquets and corsages, check out www.growingtulips.com. They were bought in bulk and I put them all together the night before the wedding. Good luck.

Okay just some insight... I am a photographer. If you do plan on highering a photographer, make sure you look at other work he has done and ask him/her to bring there camera when you meet BEFORE the wedding. Have him take a few pictures on the spot and show you how they turned out. Many Photographers that I have worked with just say they are wedding photographers becouse there is a lot of money in Wedding photography. So make sure he really knows what he is doing.

For saving money though you could go to a local collage and see ask some photography students to come to the wedding and take pictures. Then have them give you the pictures after. Most students photographers take good pictures and love taking pictures so much they would pay you to go. Just an option though.

My husband and I had a very nice, yet inexpensive wedding. We did not do a lot of the traditional things. We had no cake - just served an assortment of desserts that family and friends help make. We did not have a professional photographer - we had a friend with a very nice camera take photos (I would recommend going to a photographer just for a sitting of the two of you though). We had a reception, but there was no DJ - we played soft easy-listening music so people were still able to mingle and talk. We each only had one attendant - saved on tux, dress and flower costs. There are a lot of little things you can cut out of a wedding with it still being a very nice occasion.

Marketers have done a great job convincing people that a bunch of useless garbage is necessary for a wedding. What about your dress....have you placed an ad for a good used wedding dress in your size? or considered renting one? Rather than going with a florist, check with up-scale grocery stores in your area to see what their cost of flowers is. It's easy to get caught up in wedding mania, so you really need to think about what is important to you and what will remain as cherished memories. An engraved cake cutter is pretty much junk after the ceremony, but you really need to start shopping for a professional photographer...now! Your photos (video optional) are going to be those things that last for years and bring back memories. Uncle Frank may be willing to take photos with his new digital camera, but you may not be able to get them reproduced the way you would like, and Uncle Frank may not be the best photographer in the world. You can make your own groom's cake souvenirs by buying netting in your colors and wrapping up a mini-chocolate bar to give to guests. Be creative, and have a wonderful wedding.

If you're on a tight budget, you could ask a close friend or family member that you trust to do pictures for you, so that you could save money. Also, for the reception, consider just doing appetizers instead of meals for your guests. This is a good way to save money as well, but you should somehow mention this in the invitation, so that people are aware that it is appetizers only. Videographer isn't necessary, unless you really want it. Enlist family and friends to help you and designate them to help you plan. If you have a great cook or baker in the family, ask them to help you with deciding on a cake, or better yet, if you have a small wedding, maybe they can do a homemade wedding cake.

There are a lot of ways to save money, you just have to be creative.

Goodluck, and have fun planning!

DO NOT skip on photography. It doesnt matter how hard you try, you'll never remember exactly what happened that day.. You will appriciate your pictures and videos for the rest of your life.

You may be able to bargain on some of your wedding needs. For instance, alot of photographers have a videographer that works for them or they work together recommending each other. You might be able to get a package deal. For other items, bargain with people. If they want your business bad enough they may go gown $20-$50. It would be good to be married in an off season when they want to get all the business they can.

There are ways to get around everything. You definitely need a photographer. You have to capture the moments of you wedding. You can always go back a look at them. I still do after 6 years. If you want it recorded. Get a camera and ask someone that you know, who is reliable to tape it. GOOD LUCK!!! My wedding was perfect and I only spent $3000. The key is to check with people you know first.

I was on a tight budget for my wedding also. And photographers can be very expensive. To help with costs we hired a professional photographer to take pictures after the wedding, i.e. the poses with bride, groom, wedding party, family, etc. We then had a friend take the pictures at the reception and we paid for the film and the developing. As for the videographer, we had a friend who likes to take videos video our wedding and reception with our camcorder. It helped a lot with the costs. Good Luck!!
