Kippah Vs Yamaka

Actually, Yarmulke/yamaka is Yiddish, Kippah is Hebrew.

Yarmulke is the proper way to pronounce the word, but people sometimes say Yamaka instead.

It's a contraction of Yir'u M'eloka, Fear of God, which hints to us that the reason we wear them is to remind us that there is someone "above us"

yarmulke is a more correct transliteration of the word. 'yamaka' is a common pronounciation. Both refer to the same thing...the head covering worn by men.

yarmulke is a contraction of yireh malka which means fear of the king.

Yarmulke is pronounced "yamaka" by *some*, but certainly not all, American Jews. It is not, however, the standard pronunciation. Alternative spellings include yarmlke, yarmelke, and yarmulka, but in all cases you should pronounce the "r".

I just call it a kippah.

Yarmulke is how it is spelled in Yiddish.

Yamaka is how it is pronounced in "English" or Yiddish.

(In Hebrew it is called a Kippa-pronounciation.)
