In a British opinion poll conducted by Ipsos Mori this September, global warming was ranked "the most serious threat to the future wellbeing of the world", beating terrorism and war by almost two to one.
Quoted from today's Guardian
Are there any signs of hope that we can turn it around?

In the UK, only 1% of the population does not believe it's a problem. Isn't it amazing that in spite of all the evidence, there are still people on this side of the Atlantic who deny it the fact? I hope they are young enough to still be around when the sh*t hits the fan.

Although global climate change has the potential to have a major impact on human society and culture, I don't think it is the biggest threat facing the well being of all life on Earth.
The biggest threat would probably be habitat loss. From the well-publicized tropical rain forest ecosystems, to the virtually unpublicized, but far more endangered temperate prairie ecosystems, to the boreal forest, and even the great ocean fisheries, mankind is over-utilizing and destroying all of them, paving them over, building Wal-Marts and gigantic mono-culture farms and tree orchards on top of them.
We are ravaging the biodiversity of the planet, and the ability of wildlife to sustain itself. Our mono-culture agriculture is heavily dependent on chemical fertilizers that run off into our water courses and choke our lakes and streams with algae and weeds, deplete the soil of natural nutrients, and leave them wide open to massive outbreaks of pest insects. This includes not just our food crops, but also our forest 'management' practises as well.
Many of the great fisheries are depleted so far they may never recover, which could also drive many other species of fish and birds into extinction.
These unsustainable practises have a much greater potential to threaten life on Earth, including humans, than even the ice caps melting and drowning all of the coastal cities under 100 m of water, while the interior of the United States turns into a giant desert.
And if we don't do something to protect some of these habitats soon, it will likely be too late.

The biggest threat to the world today is paranoia and stupidity. Brits only believe what they are told to believe. Because global warming makes great headlines, the media flog it constantly. Its little wonder that Brits think its a big issue. But if they really stop to think about how much the temperature has increased over the past 100 years, its bugger all. It looks big because its plotted on a graph with an exaggerated scale. But if you plotted the change on a normal daily temperature graph, you would hardly notice it at all. Environmental lawyers see a lot of money to be made from litigation if they can convince enough people that global warming is a real threat. Don't be a sucker for this scam.

The global warming is a serious problem and threat to the future wellbeing of the world, but the threat facing the world is not a only one, in my believe.
I would refer you to WWF living planet report issued recently on Tue. 24 Oct 2006. In this report three different scenarios have been described :
1. Business as usual scenario
2. Slow shift scenario
3. Rapid reduction scenario
The report also provide catalyzing model to the transition to sustainability.
Yes, these scenarios about ending global overshoot and footprint and bio-capacity factors that determine overshoot. But still the scenarios are apply to the global warming.

What are the key points of contention between people who believe in global warming and people who don't? Political idelogy Vs science. If you read reports and journals then you know how dangerous global warming is to the society. The only way to turn around is to educate people and force the government from being ignorant, selfish and in-denial. Period.

The biggest problem facing the World today is stupidity (closely followed by Al Gore ☺)
The Earth has been through several 'ice ages' with periods of warming between them, and nobody 'knows' what caused the 'warming trends' between those ice ages. But it's a fairly safe guess that it wasn't anything that H. Sapiens did ☺

Not in the least. Read Michael Crighton's "State of Fear." It's a fictional story, but it's footnoted to the extreme and gives you a glimpse at the deceit that is global warming.

Lumberjacks, because all they are doing is destroying undisturbed pieces of the Amazon rainforest which is not allowing the tribes who have not been tainted by the outside society.
