I got one of those "gotcha" tickets in the mail for pressing a stale yellow. I just paid it through the mail on time. Does this count as a "conviction" or is a conviction considered something a little bigger than a speeding or red light ticket.

If you pay a fine, or are ordered to pay a fine, and you do nothing about it, it is a conviction. If you don't want a conviction on your record, hire a lawyer to contest it.

You were convicted of a moving violation, which is an infraction of the law.
If you are answering a questionnaire about having been convicted of a crime, this is not considered a crime.
A crime committed while driving would be something like reckless driving, or DUI.
If you are concerned about whether or not this will show up on your driving record, it will.

Paying the fine is an admission of guilt - hence, a conviction. You would have had to contest it (and won) for it NOT to be a conviction.
