As an adult child, I mean the age 25 or older. Living close by to the parent, is it the child's responsibility to initiate contact with the parent?

No, communication is 50/50. Whoever makes the call first isn't important and should not be an issue. What IS important is that you both communicate with each other.

I think one call a week, like a routine thing, is a nice gesture towards people who have by the sounds of it raised you properly.

That way they know you care and are available to them, yet you are able to keep them as distant as you need. A little give and take is good and family will always be there for you.

nope, either one can call the other. Why would a parent or adult child wait for the other to call? I do not understand that concept.

It should be both ways. Children and parents should talk to each other because they want to not because they are supposed to.

It shows respect when you call your parents to let them know how you are doing and how they are doing - I am proud of you!@
