My husband is Muslim, so I knew about some of these rights..and I know how I am treated by him..I would LOVE to become active in learning more about Islam, but really don't have a starting point!
It's not like I can go with him to the Mosque or join the guys in prayer, and I don't know any females to talk with!

Men and are women equal:
4: 1 O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever an All Watcher over you.
9: 72. Allah has promised to the believers -men and women, - Gardens under which rivers flow to dwell therein forever, and beautiful mansions in Gardens of 'Adn (Eden Paradise). But the greatest bliss is the Good Pleasure of Allah. That is the supreme success.

If Islam was practiced correctly by Muslims, the rest of the world would be praising us to the skies right now, instead of condemning us for some ignorants' barbaric actions. Although I agree that of course many frustrated Muslims act to defend themselves and their countries (like the Palestinians), I won't get into that right now. The point is; if fanatic Muslim countries actually GAVE their women their GOD GIVEN rights, nobody would be able to deny that Islam respects women as intelligent, productive and cherished human beings.

I live in Egypt, where most of the population is Muslim, and I've always enjoyed the fact that there are hardly any gender discrimination issues or sexual harassment in the workplace. I'm also rarely treated like an object and I like the way I'm judged by my work, not my appearance. I believe that my country is a good example and hope that those who manipulate Islam to serve their own selfish purposes never get hold of our government.

Let me put it this way: I am a muslim, and I realized that the better Muslim I am, the better I will be to my mother and my wife. To judge Islam view of women, you should read what Islam says. Many of today's muslim practices are based on ignorance, or lack of education not coz of Islam. Someone mention the rape that should have 4 witnesses: This is not true. You need four witnesses to have the adultery punishment on the man. But, as a rape crime, it is up to the court to judge it and get the appropriate punishment, which can reach execution. Proving the case and assigning the punishment is left open to the court. Rape was not common in old days this why you won't find clear punishment about it. Many crimes were left to the court (Ta'zeer) as conditions and crimes evolve over time.

To know about the way of execution of law, I don't think it isn't necessary to visit any site or read thick books- after all we are just trying answer a common question.
1.I am not at all amazed to see the kind of rights Muslim women enjoy because I know Islam is man-dominated religion/society. So we can't expect equal right for women in Islam.
2.Women inherit just half of that of men. A woman can be beaten by her husband (it is legal!). Man's misdoings are blamed on women, so and so.
3.I am a human being.
I know many Muslim women personally. Whenever I interact with them, a sad thought is coming to mind- how good it would have been had they got at least some rights women of other religions enjoy!- They have a strong desire to come out of this oblivion, but they know it is impossible. 90% of the Muslim women have resigned to the fact that they have no a way out.
Dear Muslim friends, whenever you try to establish a crystal clear fact otherwise, you are tarnishing the image of your religion.

Expectations
---------------------

Elephants have been trained and used by humans as work animals for as long
as 4,000 years. How is it possible for a 175 pound man to keep an 11,000
pound elephant in captivity?

When an elephant is very young, it is tethered to a four foot long wooden
stake driven into the ground. This stake is physically able to hold the
young, small elephant, despite the elephant's repeated attempts to escape
it. After unsuccessfully trying many times to escape, the young elephant
eventually comes to believe that escape is impossible. This belief is
carried into adulthood. When the elephant is full grown, it could easily
break free from the four-foot wooden stake, yet it never even attempts to
do so. This intelligent, powerful creature is held captive, not by any
physical restraint, but by its own thoughts.

Does it make you wonder what thoughts of your own might be holding you
back? Are you tethered to circumstances from which you could easily break
free, if only you knew you could?

Your thoughts can be your prison, or they can set you free to soar. If you
think you can, or if you think you can't, you're absolutely right. In order
to do anything, or become anything, or have anything, you must first
believe that it is possible. It must exist in your mind before it can come
to pass.

Expectations become reality, so expect the best of yourself.

Yes I did know about the rights of a woman under Islam, many people confuse tribal traditions and rights that a woman has in a certain country as her rights under Islam and they are not the same at all. I am a Muslim, I converted several years ago after I was fortunate enough to marry an Egyptian Muslim who taught me about Islam. Al Hamdilliah.
Thank you for trying to teach other the truth about Islam.

I've known this for a long time from studying Islam and the Qur'an (I'm an atheist). The problem, as in all religions, lies in the execution of those principles. Even if the holy text of some religion says that women are on par with men, it hasn't translated to equality within the cultures that allegedly adhere to those beliefs. The same can be said for Christianity and other religions, not just Islam.

so, that means that you Muslims had ignore the holy Koran or that means that the rules in the holy Koran had been changed if this had taking place, that is very nice, you are moving close to Christianity, where everybody are equal male or female. Because as far as I know Cruel Muslim mullahs, imams and ayatollah's insist a woman must wear a veil as a way to remove the female sex from its just position and influence in the world--itself a form of slavery. You may think this to be a small issue. You wouldn't if you were a woman and had to bundle up in 110 degree weather every day, just because of extreme male chauvinism. This comes from Muslim interpretation of the way Muhammad treated his own wives to apply to all women.

O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies. Sura 33:59, The Noble Quran

And speaking of seeing a woman's face:
It is no sin before their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their brother's sons, or the sons of their sisters, or their women, or their (female) slaves. Sura 33:55, The Noble Quran

A graphic example of fanatical oppressive Muslim dress codes occurred in March 2002 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. A fire occurred in a school there in which 15 young girls were killed in a fire. During the fire in the school the girls had shed their oppressively hot all-concealing outer garments. Actually preferring the death of these young girls to the transgression of Islamic Law, Saudi Arabian Religious Police (the muttawa) actually battled against police and firemen who where trying to open the doors to free them.

Are you amazed by the facts?

While some or all of these may be intrisically true, they are not manifestly true in ALL tribes and ALL nations.

And, Women don't have the right to be clerics or Ayotollahs or other religious leaders nor to preach at a Mosque, do they!

Name a few women Clerics.

What does Islam say about men and nations who oppress women, yet are explicitly Islamic.

Which nation of Islam gave them the vote in all elections 1425 years ago! That's interesting. What was the country.

I know it wasn't Iraq.
