Ours changes direction, but not every time it is switched on. The direction it chooses to rotate appears to be random

It is. Bascially, the motor inside the turntable is an AC driven one and most of these are bi-directional. The AC supply isn't polarised, and the direction of rotation depends on which position the stator is at before the current is applied. Some expensive microwaves have DC motors which are electronically controlled for direction. They swap directions during operation too - but these are rare.

I have never seen one that changes direction of rotation and am very surprised by that. The idea of rotation is to overcome irregularities in the microwave field pattern. As long as the food is turning so that it all gets a chance to be exposed why would the maker bother to sometimes make it turn one way and sometimes the other? I can't see that as a feature that they could advertise as having a value worth anything to consumers.

Is it a specific brand or a specific high level of quality beyond what I have ever used or ever repaired?

If it reverses direction and I dont know why it should, then this is achieved by some sort of timed switch. I would think that the random element results from where that switch stops when you open the door and that in itself would somewhat random depending how long you cooked the item for

It's a 50-50 chance depending on the moment the turntable switches on at what point in it's cycle the alternating current is. at one time electric clocks were the same you'd have to have a couple of goes to get them to run the right way now they have a ratchet that flips them back if they start wrong.

Timer?

Some kind of mechanical device that counts clicks or seconds in operation....and then changes direction at the set time.
