Now that you have read all the above versions of the reason for a soul, let me enlighten you.
First off, we are the soul and not the body. So its not a matter of if all living things have a soul, but all souls have a body, be it a human one or plant or animal.
The body is just like a vehicle we, the soul uses to carry us through life. The body just like a car, becomes old or unable to perform its task any more, so we leave it, it dies and we, the soul moves on.
The soul has nothing to do with if something has a thinking brain to reason things, or a conscious or emotions or whatever. The soul is not affected by these physical attributes. The soul feels no pain nor does it feel any emotions. The soul is part of that greater spark of Divinity which is God. We all all part of that Divinity, including animals and plants and all things that live.

Because of the difference in opinion on this topic, it proves the churches are not teaching the truth about the soul. The Bible CLEARLY says that humans and animals are souls. Concerning the first man Adam, Gen. 2:7 says that "the man came to be a living soul", meaning he became a living person. What about the animals? At Gen. 1:20 and 21, animals were called living souls. See also Lev. 24:17, 18; Rev. 16:3.

The first book of the bible states that animals and fish are souls. They don't have souls and neither does man. Genesis also states that God blew into Adam's nostrils and Adam became a living soul.
Further proof a soul does not live on after death...Jeremiah 15:9....states that the womans soul was struggling for breath....she was struggling for breath....then she died
I hope you agree there are no perfect , sinless people on earth..we all sin....we ( as souls) all die Ezekial 18: 4.
Joshua 11:11..tells of a battle and how they were striking every soul with the sword till they were all destroyed.
As far as the plants ..I have no knowledge of them being souls..but they are Jehovah's creation and must be respected as all of creation( Psalms 24:1)...for the warning comes...God will bring to ruin those ruining the earth.

Animals do have a soul but their soul is connected to their body just like a lost man that never have trusted in what the Lord Jesus Christ did on the cross for them. Colossians 2: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Animals do not sin so when they die they return to the earth and mankind dies their spirit returns to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 3: 21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth? Ecclesiastes 12: 7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. God put animals and plants on the earth to be us of man and to provide food. They can reason or make a chose like man so they do not sin and don't need a savior like we do.

fireball226: STFU! Loads of animals have plenty of intelligence! Ants may not but the fact that certain animals can be domesticated (ie: the ability to learn, a concept that creationists have trouble with in themselves) proves, even if limited, intelligence.
And now to the real answer. Christians delude themselves with this 'knowledge' so they can, with a clear conscience, proceed to use the world as they see fit. Cutting down trees, killing animals needlessly - even for sport, pushing some species to the brink of extinction because they believe that some god created the Earth and said "Don't worry about them, they don't have souls."
Personally, I don't believe in this 'immortal soul' crap that they go on about. I'm not sure what I believe about the soul and that because I've experienced ghostly activity first hand but I don't believe that we all die and go to Heaven/Hell.

Hello!
Although I don't believe in Christianity, I believe in an another aspect of the Abrahamic Faiths.
Everything is made by God for a purpose.
Plants? What purpose do they have?
-Give us food.
-Beutify the environment.
-Fresh air
-Protection
-Ecosystem balance.
Animals?
-Home pets
-Food
-Set balance to the ecosystem.
Is it stated in the Bible that Animals and Plants has no soul?
I need the verse which says so.
Yes, we do need these things. But, do they have the free will that Humans have? I doubt so. They live for a purpose set by God. He work wonders.
I believe in God. And so do you. We believe in the same God but different ideals.

Well according to the bible man was the only creaure that god breathed into and granted a soul. everything else that was created was just a "thing".
That makes it rough since it really is the cause of the mentality that man is more special than nature, above it, and that he can kill animals and cut down trees without any real worries or bad feelings about the situation.
A cow a rock and a tree are all just things... that they can dominate and use as they see fit.
It's a totally different concept vs other beliefs that try to suggest that everything is life is connected and that no one being or thing is above another.
The real question would be - did god really do that, or was it just man writing something down that made them feel more special then they should really feel?

They lack complex thought patterns that would make them responsible for their actions. It is humans ability to chose between right and wrong that gives us our soul (Christian reasoning).
However, I tend to believe that every living thing has a soul based on my beliefs that every living thing is equally valuable. I can't imagine my dogs not having souls, just look into their eyes. And if not exactly a soul, then plants definetly an enduring lifeforce that enters the universe when it dies.

Most (not all) Christian religions raise the human being above plants and animals. Humans have the privelege of having a soul and having dominance over all other creatures on the earth. No souls in plants and animals means you don't have to feel guilty for exterminating an entire species.

That is correct. Other forms of life do not have souls. If animals had souls, we could not eat them. There would have to be a plan of salvation for their souls, like there is for ours. That is how man is made in the image of God. Man has body, soul and spirit. God gave man dominion over the plants and animals. They are subordinate beings to man.
