Tough one. Regardless of what your doctor told you, the child could have died before the candy dissolved.
Sit down and talk with him. Let him know that his fears are from the choking incident, but that soft food won't choke him. Assure him that you have training in how to prevent children from choking (you DO, don't you?!) and that you will stay very close to him, to make sure that doesn't happen again. By the way, you should NEVER allow a toddler, up to the age of six eat anything while unsupervised, even in the back seat of a car.
In the meantime, provide him with Pedisure to make sure he gets some nutrition.

That is very traumatizing to a little one, glad to hear that he's ok. Give him time, he will eventually eat when he gets hungry enough. Maybe try limiting his liquids a little (not too much or he will become dehydrated). Esp. limit them at meal times.......tell him he can have his sippy when he eats a few bites of the meal. He will eventually see that he won't get choked evrytime he eats. I wish you the best, I hope that things work out well!! Just be patient and show him alot of understanding.

Actually my daughter did the same thing. She was tramatized for like 2.5 weeks and the only thing she would eat was the baby food off the shelves and she was 2.5 years at the time. So you can try baby foods and explain that if babies can eat it he can. Also try soup and vitamins to make sure he is getting enough goodies into his system (milk too). My daughter started eating again when we went out to dinner and she seen all the other little kids eating food too. She just observed and did it!

Start back slowly with things like popsicles, mashed potatoes and soups. When he sees that he CAN swallow and not get choked he will begin to eat normally again.
When I was 4 I took a drink from a water fountain at a park and must have swallowed wrong. It felt like I had "a bone in my throat". I didn't eat that whole day because it hurt to swallow. I also used to get strep throat and it was terrible to swallow with such a raw throat. Milk shakes worked the best for me as popsicles used to burn (I think it was the citric acid from the fruit juice.)
Whatever you do, do not make fun of your son. It's REAL to him....

What were you doing a 3 year old candy, he should be eating vegetables so that he grows up well. In a few years you would want to cry because he is hyper and he is sick not remembering that you are the one that started it all
