I am not as interested in beaches as I am culture. I have been to a lot of beautiful beach areas around the world so, unless it is specifically stellar, I would rather do something else.

Chiang Mai is Thailand's cultural centre.

Ride an elephant in the jungle, visit some hill-tribes, see Doi Suthep temple, visit the night bazzar and haggle for some bargains.
Five days is very short, but much better than no days.

to short time.
But one amazing tour is the River Kwai 2 day trip. It offers stunning views, amazing landscapes, train trip along mountainsides, sleeping on jungle raft, boat trips etc. Many agencies offer this trip combined with trips to Hot springs, waterfalls, floating market, tiger temple, hill tribes, elephant riding etc. Its a full 2 day program where you will see a lot and only 2 hours driving from Bangkok. Price around 2000-2500baht per person.
Remember to use at least one last day for shopping in Bangkok, and then see the temple Grand Palace when you is here.

Pick up one of the Thai travel guides at the bookstore and look up the Wats (Buddhist Temples). There are thousands are some are centuries old and very elaborate. One I really like in Bangkok was Wat Arun, covered in millions of pieces of broken pottery centuries ago. It is also fairly close to the royal barge museum and the river level may have dropped so that maybe they will be out. Due note that few locals really speak english, so when you are at your hotel, write your destinations to and from on cue cards, then get one of the hotel attendants to rewrite it in Thai, so you can just show your cards when you have a question. (including one with your hotels address to show to taxi drivers) and AVOID the tuk-tuks. Enjoy
Oh, yes, the night river dinner cruise in Bangkok is wonderful ! And if you know a local, the boat / canal market on the west side is a must do.

yet another position that would want to be effective and particularly is Koh Chang. you are able to get there by skill of bus, then ferry from Bangkok. that is not as touristy as Krabi, yet has all the organic elegance you may want to ask for, plus diving, snorkeling, and so on. We spent about per week there and loved it! Krabi is a good position to go and one position in Krabi it really is in basic terms genuinely fantastic is Railay coastline. it really is gorgeous and has all the activities you'll like. We stayed at Diamond Cave motel on East Railay and had a great time. that is about $36 US in line with evening. Have a great time!

I agree with the Chiang Mai suggestion. Add the temple at Doi Suthep. Its in Chiang Mai.

And the other answer....well Aids is high in NYC/SanFran/Miami/Paris/MexicoCity and many western places. Answers like that serve no purpose to adults with half a brain.

Stay away from "dating" while there. AIDS is RAMPANT and eat only at reputable restaurants. They maybe a little more expensive, but you're not eating monkey meat served as a hamburger.
