I'm not entirely sure but I would say that unilateral thyroid is the result of a partial thyroidectomy.

Uni = one
Lateral = side
Thyroid = butterfly shaped gland in neck which secretes thyroxin.

So if you have surgery because you have an overactive thyroid and they remove one side of the butterfly shape, you will be left with a unilateral thyroid.

It's just a guess.

sameer is right. A unilateral thyroid is one that only has one lobe, or both lobes are on one side of the throat instead of a lobe on each side.

Unilateral thyroid means affecting only one side of the thyroid.
Unilateral (u-ni--lat'-e-ral) [Latin. unus-one; latus-side]. Relating to or on one side only.
