More than most people think. There is quite a strong counter tide in the US government who want to deal with Climate Change. My company is one of two in the world who believe that climate change can be tamed by stripping carbon from the air. I am a British scientist and the US EPA phase offered me more help than the British Government. It has paid off, I now have found an ultra efficient way to capture CO2. This is the final piece of the puzzle. Over the next few years you will begin to see the capture of carbon expand. This would not come to pass if I had not had help from the US.

with the exception of California....mostly NOTHING, considering they're the #1 producer of green house gas emissions
and no if an American company opens a factory in a different country with lax laws thereby avoiding having to watch what they do they ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING
they've avoided signing the Kyoto because 'its bad for business' but if you look at the Stern Report which was just released then you see that in a few years if nothing is done all of our money is going to be going to cleaning up messes anyway
And NO the economic effects aren't that bad....studies show that there's only a .5-2% difference in Economic growth for a company/government if they chose to follow Kyoto

Governments will not succeed in cutting gas emmissions
sufficeintly enough worldwide. Scientists will have to come up
with the means to filter and purify the atmosphere with large ground based air filtration stations. We also need an
airborne system [ airships maybe ] that can fly specifcally over
big cities to clean up the smog from above.
We need to think futuristically and quickly.

Good news from America is there is a very slow sustainable movement happening. This is besides the major environmental movement the US had STARTED in the 60's. The world still needs to remember that it was America that brought environmental issues to the forefront. Besides that we are currently being run by a group of oil CEO's that want to keep the Status Que, until then, we will be feed a steady diet of 'global climate change is a myth', SORRY!

If you understand America as being the USA, I think they are doing nothing to save the planet because for them the money is most important than the planet.
Maybe one day the pollution begins to destroy they own house then they begin to take care of the planet.

Not much, mostly because the economic and societal consequences would be severely adverse, while the purported benefits are speculative, uncertain, and far in the future.
