Can anyone give me the reason for this, are there any driving instructors out there who know or anyone else ? And if you are really cleaver, can you tell me why the road stop sign is shaped the way it is. I have looked in all the obvious places like the highway code for the answer and have come up with nothing.

Can you help ?

Because iF it was the right way up, it might look like an arrowhead, saying "Go Ahead! Drive straight into all oncoming traffic - that's OK!"

Im none of the above! But I reckon it is an upside down triangle as it represents one vehicle going into an open round. So picture the bottom of the triangle representing your car and the broader top part of the sign the open road which you either have to cross or join

I don't know if there is a reason, to be honest, and Give Way signs are the same as their Irish & French equivalents - Yield for Ireland and Cédez le passage for France - so I think there may be an international standard somewhere along the line.

If the road is clear you can keep going, but you should always slow down and be prepared to stop if you see the sign. If you can't see if the road is clear before you get there you should always stop. If there is a vehicle close by you should stop and wait, even if you think you can pull out before he gets there.

cos its a hazard and the different simple shapes are a way of getting your attention at a glance. eg triangle = hazard cos if you keep going you'll probably end up in a crash! (triangles not just hazards for road signs either)

the reason for the different shapes , if it snows and the sign is unreadable the shape will tell you what it is eg majoe road ahead is T shaped etc
