Most home improvement stores have a variety of cheaper carpets to choose from. If you are doing the floor yourself and need it delivered, the contractors who work there would deliver it to your home cheaper than you could get it shipped. Plus they could move the roll wherever you are going to store it until you're ready, even a cheaper carpet can be heavy if you're buying a lot. Also if you are just doing a small area, many stores have a variety of remnants available a good prices too.

Cheap is relative. If you get a good deal on carpet in New York "online", and you live in California, you may pay too much for shipping. Then if there is a problem (probably will be) who do you get to come out to the house? Also you will have to find a local guy to install it so start in the yellow pages with installers and see if they can find discount carpeting for you.
