Truth is very often stranger than fiction.

Where does new technology come from? The immagination. Pretty much if you can dream it then you can realize it. All you need is to be able to envision the mechanisms wich would allow such inventions to take hold in reality.

Many of the things we use every day were present in works of fiction BEFORE they were ever manifest in reality. Usually despite the fact that something is a work of fiction a lot of real world and practical thinking is involved in creating a world that people can become immersed in and believe.

Is the MILITARY working in this particular area... I dont know... are scientists elsewhere in the world seriously looking into this...? YOU BET! Does the government and military industrial complex keep an eye on such things? NO DOUBT!

The people who answered before me are ignorant and probably haven't read one scientific journal or even one measly article in thier entire lives (of course with the exception of articles trying to determine how exactly abortion is murder). They probably dont even believe in the people who have gotten prosthesis hooked up to thier nerves in order to control them as if they were thier own body parts... The robotics and interfaces are not nearly perfect but this is something significant that is now possible and will be very present in the near future... maybe not 10 but 50 years down the line. They have also looked through a cats eyes via chip/neural interface to see what it sees in "sega vision". They are now replacing sight with crude technological implants to emulate eyes... this technology is in the early stages of development and actually does restore some kind of vision to the blind. They are able to see outlines of objects however the vision is described as being washed out as if a camera flash has gone off in front of them.

Great change and revolution is comming in all realms of science.

If you havent heard of it already something that I found to be quite thought provoking was an article called "rat brain flies plane" just google those words and it will come right up.

P.S. for the stupid people.
The military is very close to realizing technologies that were dreamed up and born in the 40s and 50s some of these things you would never beleive were possible. Some of these things have already been realized. After WWII we imported a lot of what one could call "mad" scientists from europe and also some more constructive and helpful scientists as well.

iheart.burritos answer is awesome!
truth is stranger than fiction.
i remember my mom saying that when she was a young girl, she used to think that 2006 would be like the Jetsons.
i think that anything is possible & we dont know what goes on behind closed doors.. they could be doing something along those lines right now or have completed a project & are just waiting for the right time to bring it out.
I think theres a saying:
if you can imagine it, it can be done.

Good answer I.H.B

We are years away from even the basics of such technology so the military won't bite. It is more likely they will develop battle armor like in Japanese anime before they start messing with DNA.
