I have Grave's Disease (hyperthyroidism) and have just started on PTU. Has anyone had experience with up and down thyroid levels depending on being pregnant or not. What was your treatment and when did you go into remission?

I was diagnosed in 1998 and was on Carbimazole until May 1999 due to pregnancy. Then on med again in Dec 2000 until Sep 2001 due to pregnancy. Then on med again in Nov 2002 until May 2003 due to pregnancy. Then on med again from Nov 2004 til May 2005 due to pregnancy. Now on again from Oct 2006 until hopefully no longer than Jul 2007. And am hoping to be fine then (and not pregnant!).

Well, as helpful as that first person's answer was, I hope I can tell you something a bit more on the topic. I have never been pregnant but was told up and down levels are common due to the monthly cycle and other factors. I was also told by my doc that Graves "burns out" after a few years and usually stabilizes or turns into hypothyroidism, which is where I am now. Much easier to treat at this stage. My Graves actually lasted less than a year so chin up.

You need to discuss this carefully when you see your endocrinologist. As I understand it efforts are being made to find a dose of RAI that will give a good cure rate for thyrotoxicosis without leading to hypothyroidism. An underactive thyroid remains a side effect of the treatment in up to 20% of those treated within the first 2 years and 3% to 5% more each year after that. Those effected might need lifelong supplements of thyroid hormone. Read up all you can find and speak to your GP, armed with the facts you can make a decision.

Thyroid disease is one of the most common health problems we face today. From a practical standpoint, there are many ways to approach this issue. Learn here https://tr.im/jG6ou

Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is a very common problem, and there are many reasons for this, including drinking chlorinated and fluoridated water, and eating brominated flour.

Chlorine, fluoride, and bromine are all in the same family as iodine, and can displace iodine in your thyroid gland.

Secondly, many people simply aren't getting enough iodine in their diet to begin with. The amount you get from iodized salt is just barely enough to prevent you from getting a goiter.
