Because we are still primal beings despite our civilized ways. Primitive man woke when the first sounds of the morning such as birds in the trees and they are very early risers and around 3am is usually their waking hours.
Especially approaching the winter months, he and his family would be up very early to start the day as there was always a great deal to do as it was a harder life. They had to do all of their chores before it got dark again - 6pm and so his body was in rythmn with nature. In the summer season, I don't know, but I only about the late autumn and into winter months.
We are still in some ways, not that different and because we have adanced too rapidly with technological innovation. We are still adapting to modernization. Those who sleep through, either sleep very late or are in a routine, but those who wake at 3am is definitley because this is what is innate for us to do.

I'm at the age where you start waking up several times during the night to "visit the lu" - but I can honestly say that I don't remember waking up at 3 a.m. in the longest time. I'm more of an even hour person myself.

Since I work at night, I am always up at 3 am...even on my off nights. Before that, though, I would wake up because I got hungry, or because I was getting kicked.

sleepless, maybe they have a newborn like myself, they could have just gotten off of work, there are many reasons.
