If you were not afraid of death and afraid of what happens after you die.....would you still be religious?

Admit it.....religion exists because people are afraid of death and what comes after it.

In case you were wondering...

I do fear death...however, I do not believe in God or any religion. I accept the fact that when you die....YOU DIE. Thats it.

And please...if you are religios dont say " I dont fear death" because that is a product of your faith. Could you please just for once step out of your religious realm and really try to picture your life without your faith....I bet you would fear death then. IF not your own death then a loved ones death.

This is the truth on my part. I really do not fear death. We all are going to die one day. Sooner or later, we all will die. So, why should I fear something, that I am certain will happen, for sure. I fear things that I have control of, things that I can change, but don't do anything about. That is what makes me worry of, of fearful of. The things that I have the ability to better, but chose to let it take over my life. Death! no, that is just another journey that we all will partake sooner or later.

I am some what a religious person, not because of my fears, but because of my fellow human being. Religion to me is the Blue Print to show how I should treat other people, to treat them as I wish to be treated, to Love one another as the Lord Loves us. It is my handbook to my life, and those who are around me. To respect other choices and Live and let Live. That is why I am, what I am. And Yes, I still would be what I am, because my life now, will dictate my life after my death. If you don't believe their is a life after death! that is your opinion, and I respect that; but I believe there is more to life than the life we live here and now.

Oh my dear, it looks like you haven't read much of Freud either, or just pick and chose the things that agrees with your views!

J.P., why would you think that you are right and millions of people are not! Are you afraid of death! You say if you step away from your religion, you will be fearful of death! Are you afraid of what will happen, and you project your fear onto others? Admit it!

Peace to ALL

Hmmm, I differ on that view. I believe most organised religions exist out of early mans need for understanding. When things couldnt be explained by science they had to give it all some meaning, like a burning disk in the sky... if you didnt know about the sun and stars and solar systems etc, it'd seem pretty strange wouldnt it?
That obviously isnt why they are around today but it could be why religion was invented in the first place, and why they change throughout history, eg... Ancient Egyptians had a god for everything near enough, the air was a god, the sky was a goddess etc, we know that isnt true now so no-one believes that anymore and God has become more elusive (if thats the right word)..... obviously religious people will disagree.
People who arent religious are afraid of death and some believe in life after death so that cant be the only reason for religion!

I lived the first 34 years of my life as if I had no faith, even though I believed there was a God, I had the idea that he was there "just in case" kind of like a genie in the sky to help only when things were real bad. But I lived a life according to my will and my desires...I could elaborate on how much sinning was involved, but take my word when I say I was GOOD at sinning. Did I become religious because I was afraid to die?..I had the notion the "good people" (character) went to heaven and "bad people" (killers and rapers) went to hell.so I wasn't "afraid to die" in fact I wanted to end my life! I was so miserable with my life that I wanted to die, the only thing that held me back where my kids, I loved them and wanted to see them grow up etc...anyway I was born again at the age of 34 and now I have peace, and true joy in my life even when things are not going well I have joy. So to answer your question no I am not afraid to die, but that was not the driving force for me to become "religious" the driving force is freedom from the effects of sin in my life. Now think about WHY are you afraid to die? Afraid to die because you have possible sin in your life that will send you somewhere you don't want to go? Jesus already went in your place all you have to do is trust him and believe. Peace

The fact that you fear death says loud and clear that you do not accept death. You can put on as many false faces as you like but i have a feeling that when the time comes near and you are laying in bed staring at the ceiling or face down in the gutter with your life spilling out around you, you will reach for God. It is just to big a risk to take and since you do not really know you wont want to risk it. I think that everyone everywhere will believe when the last of your seconds tick away. No one wants to fade away into nothingness everyone wants to go on to something else. Why not embrace that feeling now instead of at the last moment. Peace.

I don't think so. I mean, I see where you would get that from, yet understand that religion was first placed upon people, particularly slaves, because their owners wanted to give them something to have "hope" for. They believed that if they put religion into their minds and that it's wrong to rebel and good to be "righteous and obedient" to your masters, then fewer slaves would want to run away or overtake their masters. When people are born, their life doesn't begin...their death does. I believe that people should not lean on religion for comfort from death, but I am a Chrisitian, and I do believe that how you lived your life, not your "good" works or deeds done throughout, is what's gonna take you to heaven.

Religion has nothing at all to do with my not fearing death. I am not a religious person (there are too many divisions in religion)...I'm REAL! I don't fear death because God has not given me a fearful spirit.

2Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

I am a Christian.I do not fear death,as a matter of fact living is the hard part.I must say however religion has nothing to do with fear of death.I have witnessed many miracles and Holy Angels have come to me.That is where I get my proof of God.

"Religion" is how people act upon what they believe.
For many the fear of living is what drives religion. For the Christian dead is the beginning of eternity with God. I would say that your presumption that people are afraid of death is wrong for religious people.
Are you afraid to die...afraid of the unknown...
My "Religion" is a result of belief not fear.

Jp I am not relgious, but I am a spiritualist who does not conform to just one belief, and embraces all beliefs, including someone who does not believe in god. I am afraid to die, because I fear leaving my children, and that has nothing to do with religion.
For the rest they may say they have faith in god, and they will go to heaven. They may say that, but deep inside there are pieces of doubt, because when it comes right down to it no one knows.
That is why you must create heaven for yourself. The inbetween moments, when you hear a baby laugh, or see them smile. When you get that promotion, or bring that unfortunate soul who walks the streets, a hamburger. THat is heaven, and in this moment we are only ones that can create that for ourselves. And whether or not you believe in god, or jesus, buddha, Mohammad,
Marduk, Krishna, Satan, it dosent matter. I wish you well.

yes I would still be religious. My Love for God has nothing to do with fear of dying or if I get into the pearly gates. My religion and belief does not come from fear, but comes from love for God.
