12 gauge, 3 conductor wire is used for 120 VAC circuits that will draw about 20 amps and are grounded.
I do hope this question is for a class and you have NO intent on playing electrician at home at this point. Only a journeyman should use it or an apprentice under the guidance of a journeyman.

Plug into an outlet, then twist the three wires at the other end together.
Works great the night of July 4th

use it to run a 240 volt window air cond. you are supposed to use 12/3 with ground, or 12/4. but, the neutral and the ground are the same thing, so ppl. use it as both. each color leg, red, black, are hot wires. they go to a 240 volt receptical. just use the white wire (neut) to ground the recpt.
