In terms of etiquette, the nicest and most appropriate gift is to send flowers to arrive just ahead of you. I do this often, and people are always surprised, very grateful, and even impressed. This is also a feasible solution for any price range, and since she is having guests, she will want to have flowers in her house. If you have the money, a pretty silver serving piece or silver picture frame (Tiffany, perhaps) would be nice and appropriate, as well. Enjoy your trip!

I suggest you take a nice candy dish with an autumn or Thanksgiving flair, or a small crystal bowl she can sit out on the coffee table year round with candy in it. Another idea might be some new dish towels. My favorite towels are "flour sack" towels. They are the best and are the most absorbant. It sounds like you'll be helping out in the kitchen and you can never have enough towls around.

A house plant is always a good idea, but a gift basket can work as well. Putting some nice things for around the house into a cute little basket always works for me...just things that you would find handy.

Get a gift for the home (scented stuffs). Like gift sets from the body shop, bath and body works.

How about one of those large candles that have like 6 wicks in them? That would be festive and smell good!
