You can gargle with a salt water solution. Also can get something like Chloraseptic spray at the store that numbs the throat. Some throat losenges do that also. You can also take aspirin, ibuprofen or tylenol. Mostly you just have to wait it out - it will run its course.

Gargle with a warm salt water mix. The salt cadorizes the raw tissue in your throat causing it to heal faster. ...and of course the salt will cause it to "sting" for 2 to 3 minutes after, not any different than if you got salt into an open wound. For the pain you can take Tylenol, lozenges, or Chloroseptic throat spray. For lozenges I like Ricola Echinacea Honey Lemon in the pink bag or Halls Breezers (these taste more like candy than medicine lol).

cough drops with menthal eucolyptus can make your throat feel more sore after the effects of them wear off. Avoid those ones.
I know Ive had lots of sore throats that hurt way more than having strep. thats just the way it is.

If it is not specifically cold related ... Muscles can have knots (trigger points) that make them tight which in turn put pressure on nerves and other things causing pain. Molasses - a couple of swigs or Bananas 1 or 2 - both contain magnesium and potassium for muscles. Try working with the principles taught in The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. I use a chiropractor and massage therapist with it
