Its an irish legend that every leprechaun has a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow .In order to get the gold you most of course find the end and then creep up on the leprachaun you must never take your eyes of him or he will immediately vanish, he will do his best to distract you but if you stay alert the gold will be yours

Listen to the song of the Stereophonics (Rainbows & Pots Of Gold)
You will get a feeling why people might use it...

.i think it was a way to get rid of the village idiots and send them on a ridiculous quest to find the gold back in the 15th century or something as when the rainbow appears theres usually a bright light reflecting at the end of it due to te sun. xx

It is from the Irish tale of leprechauns.
People symbolize the pot of gold as success, but as they run at it it just seems the same distance.
Here is wikipedia.com so you can look at other things about leprechauns.

It's Irish! I think it's to do with leprechauns (spelling????)! I reckon it's to do with the fact that although it might be raining, there is always something good that will happen, like, ever cloud has a silver lining. But this is just my interpretation.
