You might have Spyware or Adware or even a virus on your computer. You should scan your computer(if possible) to check if you have any(using a program such as Ad-Aware SE Personal -
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,7423-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html -Its Free!). It might also be that your computer has just to many programs running (or installed) to run all at the same time. Your computer will stop responding until it has done all its tasks which would be to much (thats where viruses and the rest come in They run in the back ground using up all the resources the computer has), if thats the answer uninstall or just have less programs open.
If it is not any It maybe be your computer must be upgraded, Id say just upgrade the RAM (Random Access Memory). Not Hard Disk. If you already have 512mb RAM I do not know what to do. If you are running windows 98 or down you should also upgrade.

This problem could have 3 reasons:
1) You`re processor`s temperature is raising, you can enter in bios to see it`s value (it must be under 40 grades Celsius).
This problem can be solved by applying "Poly synthetic Silver Compound" between the radiator and the processor (I advice to let someone experienced to do that).
2) You have to many programs running when you start you`re computer
if you`re using windows xp try closing some of them by typing "msconfig" in run, from the Start menu.
3) You`re computer is virused
unplug the network cable, to prevent reinfecting you`re computer, format the computer, install a firewall program (prevent`s viruse attacks), install an anti virus (Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 has both), scan you`re computer, and plug you`re network cable. good luck ;)

Probably not enough Ram for the programme you are trying to run. Upgrade if you need to run the programme. I found PC world cheap as I was unsure what to do and they ran a health check. I would now ask on this site what and how to do it and just buy the parts. I know here I would get all the help I needed.

There are a whole host of reasons! Anything from a virus to faulty hardware or corrupt software. Be a bit more specific, platform, OS, some machine specs, describe exactly how error occurs.

If your computer hangs or reboots while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yk5zpr

if the popup comes up as soon as windows (assuming windows) has started you most likely have a program in the "run" or "run once" registry entry or in "Startup" or in the windows statup ini files System.ini boot.ini etc.
You need to boot into safe mode and fix it. (F8 when it says "Starting Windows")
