at present i have P II with 20 gb hdd and 128 mb ram. this does not support PS CS2, or digital photo processor.
What configuration should i go in for to meet my requirements?
What was suggested to me was a 160/80 GB HDD, 512 mb ram 2.66 GHz with an intel mother board and windows XP.

Everytime you ned to buy a new computer you should always go for as much box as you can afford. Current PC's are in the 3Ghz range with 1 Gb RAM and at least 250GB of disk. This is overkill right now for processing RAW images, but in 24 months it will be a boat anchor.

As far as RAW processing is concerned, why bother? If you're really keen on photography, learn to make "the shot" with the camera. Too many photographers rely on post processing to fix their warts. Get it right the first time and you'll save time and money.

For example, how many people do you know that waited weeks or months for their wedding photos? Almost everyone I speak to has a horror story. Because "Joe Pro" wasn't so pro and it took a lot of post processing to salvage some shots from a mess.

I agree with Cap to get 1GB of Ram. The system you're considering is pretty much what I currently use (I have a similar speed AMD CPU, 512MB RAM, a basic 128 MB graphics card, and WinXP). This setup works fine with PS CS(1), but a 10 mega-pixel RAW file with a few layers can turn into a +50MB psd file. With several filters the processing time is +20 seconds... not terrible, but something a little faster would make for a more pleasant experience.
I've since invested in extra hard drives (1 internal and 1 external for back-ups).
And if I were more serious about my image editing, I'd invest in a Spyder to periodically calibrate my monitor. (I use a 19 inch Philips CRT.)

Any modern computers with enough processing power will work. The spec you have above looks a bit low on the memory. You'll need at least 1GB of RAM when processing / managing RAW images. One of the most important item to consider here is the display unit. Make sure you are using either a CRT monitor or a Glossy LCD. Regular LCD displays do not provide you the color contrast you'll need to adjust you photos correctly.
