Our new cat is very sweet, but she tracks kitty litter all over the floor. The cat has a covered litter box, so I'm guessing that the litter's coming out because it's stuck to her paws. We're using clay kitty litter -- does that stick to a cat's paws more than the other kind? We're also going to get a cat litter box mat today. Any other suggestions?

I use a mat as well. However, clay litter is not the best product to use at all. It does stick to their paws more than other products. I use a couple of different products that are out on the market - one is a wheat based product which is great for odor, and sometimes I use a corn based product. The wheat product is the best overall from my perspective - it controls odor better than clay, my kitties aren't being suffocated by dust and perfumes and it absorbs faster so the box stays cleaner. It's a little more expensive than cheap clay, but worth it in the long run because it's better for the environment.

Good luck.

Well, I wouldnt just tell you to "get over it" but it is true cats are messy when it comes to litter. I have had many cats and all of my indoor cats have tracked their litter here and there. With or without a hood on the box. I too have a mat but may I save you time and money by letting you know that most cats do not like the current cat mats that are out there because they have "spikes" of plastic and cats do not like this feeling on their paws. Some cats will not even use the litter box when you put this down. Remember their paws are very sensitive. I use an out door mat that is a basic rug. Nothing fancy, it was $5 at Wal-Mart. It is the green and blue ones with the black backs. I wish I knew what it was made of but it doesnt say anything on it. I put it in front of the box and take it out once a week to get the litter off. It has cut the tracking by half but there is still some litter on the floor. I keep a small broom and dust pan beside the litter so every morning when I clean her box before work I sweep up a little it takes 5 min and we are all happier. Enjoy the kitty, she will also get better with the box as she gets older.

I got myself a piece of indoor outdoor carpet and put it under The cat litter and th space around it. It is course enough that when the cats walk on it the litter falls out of their paws then I just knock the litter out of the carpet and sweep it up. Also if the kitty has an accident it is easy to wash, take it outside and hose it down.

"cats are messy get over it"? How does that help the person? I dont know if it sticks more or less, but if you get the mat thing then that should help it alot. My cat used to track his litter around until we got a carpet thats alot like the ones made to go in front of cat boxes and it worked.

Cat mats don't work. We have four cats, two boxes, and two mats, we still have litter every were. We also use the covered ones and they have swinging doors on the front. Cats will scatter their litter no matter what. Nothing will really get them to stop.

It may be the type of litter? But yes, I suggest getting a mat..I too have to get one. My new kitten has the covered dome litter box..but still manages to get litter around it...Not too much though.. I just vacuum it up everyday when I change the box..So there is never a mess for to long.....Try a regular litter...Good luck!

I was just going to suggest a mat. The clay litter does seem to make more of a mess because it's not as fine. Make sure you get a mat with raised edges thats fairly deep, not the flat kind.

I use Fresh Step litter, the scoopable kind. My cats box is also a covered one. I bought an indoor/outdoor carpet for in front of the box so he could wipe his paws on that. It helps. I don't think there's much more we can do than that. Hope this helps...

If its covered the cat might get hot in the box and the litter sticks to its feet cause of sweat. try an open one

Get a deeper cat box...
(We had the same problem for awhile, found out the cat, when she scratched after doing her "business" was shoving it out the box).

Also, we like the one with odor control that clumps, easier and less mess. (Clay tends to "dust up" and that will get on the paws and fur and spread everywhere).

We havent had any more problems after that, and we keep ours on the linoleum, so we know if there is any "litter" around.

I wish you well..
