Try going to Tools->Options->View and check if "Paragraph Marks" is enabled on the "Formatting Marks" area.

MS Word has a mechanism to let users indentify the places where new lines have been inserted in your document.
There is a button on the standard tool bar which looks like || (the symbol you are describing in your question), its tool tip is show/hide ||.
You just click on this button and this symbol will go away. Generally people use this technique to identify if they have left additional whitespaces before the end of line.
Hope this helps.

This has happened to me too. I do not know what the symbol is but I do know that it does not print on your document. You can also turn that feature off by clicking the same symbol that appears on your toolbar. In my MS Word, the symbol is right in between the draw map icon and the zoom box icon (100%). Each time you click it, it will toggle off or on and the symbol will appear or disappear from your document. It is called the show/hide icon and it is on the standard toolbar. If your toolbar is not present, you can click on view, then toolbars, then make sure the standard toolbar has a check mark by it. Hope this helps.

All that is, is an indicator for a new paragraph. there is usually a button in you toolbar that will get rid of it...it won't show up when you print or anything. It's there for assistance with either spacing or to help you with your paragraphing. If you don't have that button up there (the button should have the same symbol), where your tool bars are do a "right click" to select which tool bars you want to appear and that button is in the "standard tool bar", once you click that and the toolbar appears you can hit it once and that symbol will go away. you can remove that "standard toolbar" by doing "right clicking" again in that upper area and unchecking the "standard toolbar" option.

In Word and most word processing programs, you can show/hide control characters like spaces and line feeds (enter). I'll bet anything the spaces between words are represented by a period as well. To hide these characters you need to go to your toolbar and press the button that looks exactly like the symbol for a line feed (enter). this will hide these character from the view. You can't really delete them they are used to control the format of the data, but you can hide them from view and regardless of the setting they will not show on the printed page.

Depends what version of MS Word you are running. Under the HOME tab, look under the paragraph section. There is a little button that looks like the symbol that you are seeing. Click no it. If that doesn't solve your problem, click on the little drop down arrow under he paragraph section and go from there.

in your case you will find it activated, you just click on it to deactivate.
