Max is now over a year old so he should know better, right? Gato is really sad and runs to me everytime that Max is around. Once, Gato was sleeping in my bed with me and Max came into the room. Gato was sleeping so he didn't notice, until Max jumped right on top of him. Max was top in his class at dog training and even won an award so it is not like he is doing this without realizing that he is hurting Gato, emotionaly and physicly. Please help!

You have to introduce your cat and dog to each other, this will require FACE to FACE with both of them.
Heres what to do.
Take your cat on your lap and let the dog in/be with you also. The cat will at first fear the dog and may hiss, but dont stop. Since the cat is on your lap it will feel "safe" with you since it "trusts" you. Now bring in the dog.
Control the dog when it barks at the cat (be firm in voice), Remember you are the leader in your house/pack and since dogs are a Pack animal, they follow what the the pack leader demands (YOU) Once you let your dog know whos is in charge, your dog will calm down and begin to except the cat, as your cat will too begin to except the dog because the cat already trusts you.
Once this is done, Keep both the cat and dog near each other (and you) as much as possable, they will both feed off your response (not letting then fight or be afraid) and will soon both become friends. It may take a week, or only a few days, it all depends on how much time you are willing to train them to knowing each other.

Max is wanting a "play mate" and Gato is the only one that he sees that is "his size".

On the dog taining, you have to keep reinforcing the training, because just going to puppy school will not "stick" unless you keep it up and reinforce it, until its "stuck" in his mind and way of doing things...

If he were a year old and still doing this, then you may have problems, but as a puppy, you still have time... constant vigilance will stop this, but, also, he needs to play.. so, play with him a lot.

I wish you well..

i had the same problem but now my 2 cats beat up my dog. what i started doing is everytime your dog even goes around the cat get something loud like a jar of coins and shake it at the dog. it will scare the poo out of him but he will eventually learn that if i mess with the cat i'm going to get scared. also you might want to have a room where the dog is not allowed like the bedroom. let that be a safe haven for the cat.

Is he playing? or is he trying to kill the cat?

Get him some toys to amuse himself. Sounds like he is bored and the cat amuses him.
