I have an appointment tomorrow at the dentist and I must admit that I am scared to death. I have to have extensive dental work done and they are giving me Halcion to take one hour before my appointment. I was wondering if anyone has used this, how long it lasted and what else you can tell me about the experience with it. Also, if you have any other suggestions to help me with the fear (or pain!) please let me know. Thanks! From one giant chicken!!! HA HA

If you are a big chicken, you will LOVE the halcion!! We've prescribed it many of nervous patients and we only hear good things back from them. If you can, limit what you eat or drink after midnight. I don't know what time your appointment is tomorrow, but this will help the medication work great!! Please have someone drive you to & from the appointment!! I've found that it's better to take the medication about 90 minutes before the appointment rather than 1 hour. You'll be pretty much out of it all day so be prepared for that. I don't know what it feels like, but I've had patients say that they are just VERY tired and just want to sleep. You shouldn't remember too much about the day. Since you'll be so sleepy, you won't care what's happening to you. And remember to take your extra pills to the appointment with you. Good luck--you'll do great!

This is called oral conscious sedation. It does not put you to sleep, but just relaxes you. The dosage is determined by your weight, so the doctor will weigh you. Once the doctor sees that you are more relaxed he/she will start working on your teeth. The doctor will still be using local anaesthetic. When finished the doctor may keep you around for a while until he/she sees that you are less relaxed. The doctor will have instructions on how to carry out the remainder of the day.

Depending on your size, .25 mg of halcion should put you into a deep sleep where you wouldn't remember anything going on while the dentist works on you....but you CANNOT fight the effects of the drug or it won't work....now, does laughing gas not put you to sleep? Are you having major work done? I would imagine that novacaine should do the job....believe me, I just had gum surgery a few weeks ago. Good luck.
