st vincent de paul or the smith family can often help out in times of need. they won't lend her money, but they will give her some food vouchers to see her through until she gets paid again.

How did she lose it? If you mean it was stolen, she should firstly report it to the police and then approach local DSS or Social Services who can provide a crisis loan. However, this money is loan and will need to be paid back in installments from her future benefits.
Similarly if she has just mislaid it/dropped it. She could try to get a grant which will not need to be paid back but I don't know how easy this will be.
Is she a member of any church/religious centre? Sometimes they have the facility to help out in times of crisis like this if she asks. Or is she afiliated to an organisation, eg if she is from Ireland, there are some charities that will help Irish ex-pats in trouble. She could try there.
A short term measure might be to refer her to the local homeless shelter where sometimes there is hot food available.

There are various organisations that should help, such as charities etc. There are a few in my area, such as the Calgary church, Samaritans, YMCA etc. They arrange for food to be prepared and served to peolpe in need. It may not be everynight, but it can defo take the strain off of being desolate. They also help with sheets, laundry, clothing etc if they have it, but its a case of first come first served.
The social/job centre will be able to advise her what aid she is entitled to. The first step is to go to the police and report the money lost, they will then give her a incident number. She would then have to go to the social and they will give her a crisis loan form, if she completes that and fills in why/where exactly the money was lost, they will take into account any debt she has to them, any other loans that she has taken out (budgeting loans dont matter) and then offer her a loan, It will probably only be about £50 or something depending on where in the UK she stays, but it is better than nothing. They will take this off her weekly money, at a rate which will be agreed by both before the money is given to her.
PS - tell her to say that she owes money out to elsewhere as they take that into consideration.
PPS - tell her to play it thick, as they people dont like to give ANY MONEY OUT AT ALL!!! as if its their own money.
Good Luck

The Government has created a portal to help individuals who need benefits because of life events. This is your ONE STOP SHOP for all the government assistance that you can possibly get
Visit http://www.govbenefits.gov
Use the drop down button
DO YOU NEED BENEFITS BECAUSE OF A LIFE EVENT?
Choose the life situation best applicable to you and then see if you qualify for the available government assistance.
Forget grant money - there's hardly any money for individuals. Go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) and Grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. But you'd be hard pressed to find any grant that would support individuals.

I agree with the earlier answer a CRISIS LOAN may help but this has to be repaid out of the DSS money they already get.

If she is in a situation where sheis totally unable to work then she should go to the dss and tell them the situation, they have an obligation to help in these situations. Dont let the people working there tell her anything else.

Dependent on the type of loss, she should consider reporting it to the police and obtain an incident number. Once she has done that she can then go to the DWP and request help ie milk tokens, crisis loan etc.
