1 calorie = 4.18400 joules

There is a discrepancy as to what is meant by a calorie in the scientific term, to what is meant in the general "diet" terms. Basically, 1 calorie in the general "diet" terms (ie: when someone says that the average man need 2500 calories a day) means 1 kilocalorie (or 1kCal).

So to answer your question, when you're talking about dietary requirements, it is understood that 1 calorie is 4.184 kJ.

There are 4.184 kJ per Calorie, when you are talking about food calories.

To convert kJ into dietary Calories, divide the number of kJ you have by 4.184 kJ/Cal.

Obviously from other people's answers there is a good deal of confusion, because one dietary Calorie (with an upper case "C" is equal to one kilocalorie, or one thousand calories with a lower case "c.")

The calorie is defined as the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of lone gram of liquid water by one degree celsius. The dietary Calorie is exactly one thousand times as much energy as the calorie.

Most vegetables have little calories, with the exception of potatoes, beans, and other complex carb veggies. Oh and avocados...they're like 250 calories per serving. Fruit is generally high caloric because of it's sugar content. Bananas, for example have 100 calories or so. Oranges, blueberries, strawberries, watermelon, and apples are some lower calorie fruits that I can think of (40-60 cals/serving). Egg whites are also low in calories, about 15-20 calories per serving.

A common metric unit of work or energy, comparable to the British thermal unit (Btu). In fact, one kilojoule equals approximately 0.947 817 Btu. In other energy units, the kilojoule is also equivalent to 0.238 846 kilocalories, 0.277 778 watt hour, or 737.562 foot-pounds in the traditional English system.

Joule, James Prescott. English physicistbvho established the universal constant of proportionality between mechanical work and heat. Joule, Unit of work or energy in M.K.S. system, amount of work done or heat generated by force of 1 newton acting over distance of 1 metre; energy of 1 watt acting for 1 second. Kilojule, 1000 Jules. Does that help?

A kilojoule is 1000 joules - joules being a metric unit of energy. 1 Kilocalorie = 4.1868 Kilojoules. I kilojoules of energy per second = 1 kilowatt.

This answer is right - this is my third attempt at answering it - I was right first time from memory - but checked anyway!
