I've only been to Beijing (last summer). I had an apt. on the east side of the city and it took almost an hour by bus to reach Tianimin Sq., which is in the middle of the city (it would take 2 hours to travel across the entire city, east to west). My point is, it's a big place!!
You need to stay downtown (Tianimin Sq. area) so you don't have to spend a lot of time traveling back and forth (although I do have to say that taxis are quite reasonable but traffic can be quite heavy).

I have been to all these cities at least once and I didn't consider the location of my hotel that important. Taxis are cheap in Asia but the traffic - especially in Bangkok & Kuala Lumpur - can be horrendous. Travelling around by train is a better option so make sure you get a hotel near a metro station. Don't worry - the transport systems in these countries are not primitive like London's. They are clean, air-conditioned , safe & reliable. Depending on the time of year & humidity you can also walk & explore that way . There is little crime against Westerners and you will see many interesting things any time of the day or night.
Enjoy your trip.

Bangkok Thailand is nice but there's a problem in language , since some people there doesn't know how to speak english.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is very nice country, friendly people but somehow hard to commute there since is kuala lumpur is somehow a big city and very traffic too like Thailand. Tourist spot are somehow far from each other. Choose the area near PETRONAS TOWER
I recommend Singapore because it easy and hassle free... you can easily commute there coz they spread map on buses but make sure you got a lot of coins when taking bus because they don't give you change. Tourist spot there is very easy to look out and very nice.
Hong Kong is nice too but if you really love shopping then you must choose this because everything there is very cheap especially at Night Market compare to other Asian countries. If you wanna go Disneyland and Ocean Park this would be the right choice.
Beijing China is somehow big and very very hard to commute and very very hard to communicate with them since most people there doesnt know how to speak and understand English. Very big problem. All you could see there are thier historical landmark and of course Great Wall of China. Be there by winter of spring so that you could have fun climbing the great wall. If summer you would hate climbing the great wall.

i've only been to Kuala Lumpur but Loved it.
We stayed at The Prince Hotel which was lovely. Inbetween the Lot shopping centre and Petronas Towers. It was a five minute walk to Lot.
The Regent Hotel is just opposite Lot so very central and looked nice from the outside.
You need to stay somewhere near these hotels.
Go on expedia or tripadvisor and map the hotels and use The Regent as being your central point. Don't stay over by Petronas Towers it's a good 20 minutes from all the shopping area and miles away from Chinatown.

Hi,
I have been to all of these places except for Beijing.
Bangkok: definitely somewhere lively such as Khao San Road, or near to Patong Market is best if you want to be in the thick of it. If you want a bit more peace, then we've stayed at the Sheraton on the Chao Phraya river before - beautiful hotel, right on the riverside, and really easy to get around on the river by boat. You could probably stay anywhere in Bangkok tho...public transport is so cheap!
As for Kuala Lumpur - I stayed at the Renaissance. Brilliant deal on an executive suite, and the location was great. Had a room overlooking the Petronas Towers, and the hotel itself was right next to a metro station, allowing easy access to anywhere!
Singapore - definitely stay either near to Orchard Road for shopping, or near to Clarke Quay/Boat Quay for liveliness! Swissotel has a lovely hotel next to Clarke Quay - with a free regular shuttle bus to Raffles/Orchard Road offered.
Hong Kong - probably Kowloon I guess....right in the entertainment and shopping area...
It all depends what you want from your holiday!
Have a lovely time.

I went to Bangkok and Singapore when I was 7 so I didn't take much ntice of where I was staying then, just how far away the pool and the beach were!
It depends what you are wanting to do in these places. I have been to KL for the past 4 years running and to be pretty central, Bukit Bintang (Bintang Walk) is a pretty good place to stay. Its central to many shopping centres, it is a 1 minute walk to the LRT (monorail running around the city - very cheap and easy to use!) and is close to restaurants and the sight seeing bits (petronas towers, Menara KL). For things such as the jungle walks and stuff, better to get a taxi. We managed to hire a taxi for the day in Penang and it cost about £15 and we went everywhere. Could try the same in KL, but be prepared to pay more than that, coz they see tourists and triple their prices!
If you haven't been before try to get to the Sunway Pyramids. Take your swimming stuff coz they have an excellent swimming pool, an ice skating rink, an archery bit and bowling all in one shopping complex
Have fun!!

the only one I have been to is Singapore. I have been there twice. First time I stayed in Havelock Road neqar Chinatown. We didn't have much of a walk to the shops but any tourist attractions or transport for them was a bit far away. Last year I stayed not too far from Raffles Hotel and it was really central for everything, as there was a train station nearby. Even though it was near Raffles it wasn't that expensive. Sorry I can't remember the name of the place. However if you are looking to get any good clothes made, there is a guy called Harry Ramchand aka Happy Harry who has his boutique in Chinatown. He is excellent. Will collect you from hotel etc to take you to his shop and provide you with juice while you're there. Have a good time.

hi, i stayed in the new park hotel (3 star)in singapore about 6 months ago. It is ok and there is a tube line 5 minutes walk away. it is in the littel india district so cannot charge the prices that some of the more central areas do, but is abuot 15mins on the tube to the cental areas.
i also stayed in the ymca (the one with a mcdonalds underneath) about 10 years ago - near the National Museum. That is really clean and cheap with air-con. but the tube line is not as close. you could always jump on buses, nice and safe - no happy slapping or any of that rubbish out there.

THE place to stay in Bangkok is Khao San Road - it's the most infamous backpacker street in the world and has to be at the very least seen to be believed. It's relatively central and I'd recommend spending at least a few days there, if only to better appreciate everywhere else!
Have a fantastic time!
