Follow this logic, the number of laws now enforced by beat cops have increased by a factor of 10 in the last 50 years. Things were not too bad back then, but someone thought we needed more laws. We are now finding (with newly ordered DNA testing) that due to police and prosecutor misconduct a good solid 10% of those on death row are actually innocent. If that is the case on death row, with all the appelate protections, how many average convicts in prison are there due to similar misconduct?

The experts are saying somewhere on the order of 25%. Now...who do you trust when the red lights come on? Are you going to be one of those 25%?

I don't like those odds.... no wonder there are so many police chases. One erroneous traffic stop can ruin your life...

THAT is the reality a new police officer needs to realize.

Congratulations to you.

The perception of the police department is largely affected by their public relations with the citizens of that community.

I think the answer depends on who you ask and what personal experiences they have had in dealing with the police.

Generally I think the average, "law-abiding citizen", "victim of crime" or "accident victim" might be more trusting. Most of these people realize that when something serious happens, the police are often the only ones you can count on.

Naturally the people who get stopped for speeding usually have an "ax to grind". People are quick to "judge" the police and criticize. It's easy to sit back and make negative remarks about them until you need them or you have tried to do their job.

Whether you work in a rural community (as my husband did) or a large city (as our son does) the "trust" issue seems to be about the same. It depends on personal experience.

Good luck to you in your future endeavor and stay safe.

It depends on the circumstance. Since your a student maybe you can help me. Where do you go to turn in police officers that lie when writing a warning ticket and you trust what they say and you sign the ticket, but when you get home you see that instead of a warning for \break light being out like he said - he wrote a warning for speeding - and he wrote down the wrong street that we were pulled over on also - plus he went back 20 + years just to find dirt on my boyfriends record even though it was a fender bender. Small town cops I no longer trust. What can we do within our writes to stop this? I would like to put my faith back in the system

Ask your self if you would like to be looked at as sometimes worse than a serial killer or rapist? police have to much authority in this country and a lot of them abuse this authority, there fore causing the people to despise them, when you go to court and you know you are not guilty , yet the judge will take the cops word over yours is sinful and wrong, I am not saying all cops are bad or liars . But, what do you think of when you read where 47men were executed and a reporter proved 35 of these men were not guilty, the cops , prosecutors knew they were not guilty, In Ill, ,app 1992 or the rampart fiasco in L,A. where reporters proved the cops had planted evidence on people mainly Mexicans, and hundreds of innocent people went to prison, yet not one cop has been punished why, or the prosecutors who were a part of this scheme, not one thing was did to them , and this happens in lots of places, yet not one cop has been punished, any where, nor has any one been prosecuted for lying for the prosecution, yet hundreds of people have went to prison for lying for the defense, so ask you self do you really want to be a part of this?? or did you get bullied around in school and now want to get back at people as most cops have did in the past, and don't forget if your I,Q, IS TO HIGH THEY CAN'T BRAIN WASH YOU , YOU WON'T MAKE IT ANY WAY, and when they have a 98.8 % conviction ratio you damn well know some one is lying,

I am a police officer and when I was attending the academy one of the instructors said it best I think when he said "in our line of work you are either a hero or an @ss-hole" there is no in-between. I also have been an M.P. for years and I found that people based on thier experiences with the police will judge every police officer they meet because one cop gave them grief at one time or another. Just remember whether you are a police officer, mechanic, doctor, etc. there are "shmucks" wherever you go or work. If you decide to become a police officer then I can guarantee you people will talk smack on you behind your back but then when they need your assistance you will be the first one they turn to.

Tough one,, I think as a rule somewhile ago in society the general thinking about Police went from Good to bad really.

I have not had trouble with legal issues myself,, but have had to deal with officers on Animal calls, Urban widlife issues etc...

The ones I do not trust or respect are the ones who are officers because of the Power.. the ones who are into the Power end of it all..

More and more I see officers who are NOT acting like Civil Servants.. yup I said it...
Civil Servants.. they are to be there to enforce the laws but also to help and serve the public in whatever manner they are able.

Personally... If I was in trouble... they are who'd I would like to see... but do I trust them...
Prob not fully no...

They are people just like everyone else ... and each has its own personalities and trustworthyness... SO I eval each on its own merits.. but as a whole NO I suppose I dont trust them. Ive not even had a speeding ticket... sooo that says alot I think that I dont in general trust them.

Hope that helps

I trust some police. I don't trust the ones that are under investigations for doing crime. Those police needs to be in jail. Just what we need, a criminal dressed up like a cop allowed to carry a gun.

There are some that I trust and some that I don't ...also if I am going the speed limit and a officer passes me going faster then anyone no lights flashing then get over in the lane and proceeds to speed .....well I think they think they are above the law and I have seen some bully officers , but there are good and bad depends on the person wearing the badge

No I don't trust in the police or any other arm of the justice system...why? Because I know way to many crooked cops and live in Milwaukee Wisconsin which probably has the third most corrupt police department in the US behind only New Orleans and New York,
