I heard that a cap full of Listerine is supposed to help. Mix it in with the shampoo every time you wash your hair and it greatly reduces dandruff.

are you sure he has dandruff, or is it just a dry flaky scalp.. Dandruff is a medical condition that produces yellowy greasy flakes, which can smell pretty rank to be honest.. where as a dry scalp leaves snow like effects all over your clothes etc.. dandruff can be treated with a shamopp from your doctor, as usual head and shoulders etc wont touch it... if its a dry scalp then a couple of hot oil treatments should do the trick.. vo5 hotoil and massage into the scalp and use an oil based shampoo.. like almond oil.. sometimes not rinsing properly, baseball caps etc, is the main cause..

before he washes his hair make sure that he takes a comb and lighty scrubs his scalp because sometimes before the dandruff falls it is caked on the hair and that is why sometimes when you finish washing it its still there. so lighty scratch with the comb. then scrub (not to hard) his head with shampoo and put in some conditioner. sometimes we get dandruff from not washing out the shampoo properly so its important that your hair is completely washed out of that stuff. He probably has really thick hair as well and people with thick hair can get dandruff. make sure that he is not wearing tight hats or anything that can pull at the scalp. if his situation is more then serious then he may need to see a doctor.

T Gel by Neutrogena which you can get at any supermarket or chemist is good but it smells a bit.
It could be an allergy so it might be as well to see a GP or speak to a pharmacist. Could be psoraisis or dermatitis.
It could also be something to do with what he's eating, or not eating. I heard that drinking too many carbonated drinks can lead to a loss of certain vitamins and lead to flaky scalps.

Dandruff occurs when the skin on the head is dry. So, your friend could use hot oil treatments for the head and hair. There are also many shampoos for dry and irritated skin that might help.

apple cider vinegar works well !!!! I have a spray bottle I used to get all the scalp and hair, let it sit on for a few minutes prior to shampooing. Then shampoo and rinse well. The smell may linger, but if you use a conditioner, it will help take away the smell of the vinegar. It may take a couple of shampoos, but you will see immediate results! GOOD LUCK
