Go to http://www.travelers.com/travelers-homepage.asp and click on find an agent. Look for another agent in your area and switch by signing an agent of record letter. You would be able to stay with Travelers. That would be the first thing that I would do . I would not look for another company.

You can ASK Travelers to find you a replacement agent in that area, and have them take the policy over on a "broker of record" letter. Actually, I would do that FIRST, before trying to shop it out.
There was probably a problem with your agent - like he didn't pay his bills, or his losses were too high, or he lost his license, or died or something. If he was a DECENT agent, he would have arranged, in advance, to have all his Travelers policies taken over by another agent, without the cancellation being issued.
Now, he's probably scrambling to find a replacement carrier, but will have a hard time - if Travelers didn't want him any more, then odds are, ESPECIALLY in Florida, no one else will want him either. So I'd try to find another FL agent!! EVEN if they don't live by you.
OH, which reminds me . . .I have a buddy who has a FL agency, I can't remember if he has Travelers or not, though. Try www.huttinsurance.com .

It probably has less to do with the bankruptcy and more to do with the fact nearly all major insurance companies are pulling out of Florida. Bankruptcy or not, it is very difficult to find insurance in Florida these days. Thank your Governor, Charlie Crist for that. He scared all the major private companies away and is now pushing the Citizen's Property insurance (Florida's state run insurance) to homeowners. The problem is it doesn't have the financial strength to handle any catastrophes. Ultimately it will fall back on the Homeowner's again in the form of a bail out tax, if another hurricane were to hit Florida. I would be very worried if I were a homeowner in Florida right now.

I work at an insurance agency in Tarpon Springs, FL and answer this question AT LEAST 10 times a day on the phone. First off, Travelers is using that excuse to not make them look like the "bad guy" and they want the agencies to look like we are not renewing our contract with them, when really they aren't renewing their contracts with any agencies in FL. This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with you filing any claims or not filing or anything of that sort. My opinion is, and I tell this to customers, they are pulling out of the state of FL before a disastrous hurricane hits just so they don't go bankrupt. There are a few companies out there writing policies BUT there is a lot of different criteria you have to meet, otherwise you ARE going with the poorhouse, Citizens. If you live in a condominium you are in luck otherwise not really, unless you have a brand new house. I would check with Universal Property and Casualty, Mercury Insurance Company, Tower Hill Insurance and see if they are writing in your zip code and if they can refer you to an agent.
Universal's Ph# 800-425-9113
Mercury's Ph# 727-561-4000
Tower Hill's Ph# 888-245-4385
Good luck!! Feel free to email me about this and I will see if I can help you. If you live in Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee....message me and I will see if our agency can help you. BUT CALL THOSE COMPANIES FIRST.

Sorry to inform you but everyone, no matter what state you are in has gone up at least 25 percent or more over the past 3-4 years, in a way it is helping the insurance company's rebuild after all these claims in the states that have endured devastation. They cannot afford all the loss if the same area like Florida is repeatably hit with bad weather, so like all companies they have to cut their losses and discontinue coverage for homes. Prudential also has tried to pull out of home owners insurance in FL, but at the last minute decided to continue coverage. I know everyone hates insurance co., but they are a business also and they like to make money like every other American. Maybe the government has to get involved, and regulate insurance co, but that could make matter worse. Its a catch 22!

I have seen this question probably about 50 times on Yahoo Answers in the last year. You are feeling the frustration that many home owners are experiencing. Many insurance companies have ceased writing policies in Florida because of the recent active hurricane season.
To save time you may want to input your information at an online quoting service such as NeQuote or InsureMe. They will provide you with multiple Florida home owner insurance quotes with no obligation. Let them do the legwork for you, with fewer and fewer companies writing in Florida they can help find the right companies with affordable home owner insurance rates.

Yup, it's happening everywhere down here. Liberty Mutual just cancelled my neighbor who's been with them for over 15 years. At least they were nice about it....they're not being cancelled until March so they have time to deal with it and find a new carrier.
Personally, my insurance premium just DOUBLED this year. I'm paying over $3,000 annually and that doesn't include another $1700 for flood insurance.
Our legislators better do something about this outrage if they want to keep their jobs!
