My 3 year old lab cross is smart because she is a "mood reader". When I was grieving following the death of my brother she searched the house until she found a silk yellow rose (my favorite) and laid it in my lap. Then she put her head on my lap and stayed there for more than an hour listening to me as I shared my guilt, fears and anger. Not even my husband or adult children were able to give me an hour of time, without interruptions, for me to get it off my chest.

Not as intelligent as they seem to be but rather they are more intellegent than they consider themselves to be. If a dog was really that clever & it knew it, it would behave differently. However a do reacts instantly in dangerous situations which seem mind-boggling but true. Those are the natural abilities which dogs have for sensing danger.

My moms dog got fixed a few years back. When we brought him home, he could hardly walk. He would yelp if you tried to touch him. She called the vet and the vet said it wasn't normal that he be that sore. So we brought him back in. We get there and put him on the ground. As soon as he heard the vet's voice, he started running all over the place looking for her. We were shocked. She asked us if we give into him when he yelps and moans...etc.... we said of course because we really think he is hurting... She told us to stop because it's all an act. We brought him back home, he did the same thing. Wouldnt walk and would yelp all the time. We looked at him and told him to stop faking it....He never did again.......

Way smarter than we though.

My dog seems shy but is rather smart for example the other day I called her into the house and she couldnt make it to the door because she wrapped her leash around a tree and couldnt come any further. I took my hand and said go THAT way and pointed the direction she should go to untangle herself and she went the way i said back around the tree and came into the house.

I consider my dog smart because she is clever ... because she is always figuring out new ways to do things with out getting caught.. The garbage for example, she can now open the lid, and eat out of it without spilling... she has learned too lift plates off the counter and set them on the floor with little to no sound, and nothing getting broke... so that she can lick them clean.

All dogs are trainable... its what they can figure out on their own that can be amazing.

I like your question, and I am sure you will get a million fun answers!

Well, our dogs do things when we think they are not looking. When they want to get out of their fence, my lab and St. Bernard will take their paws, and open up the fence for one another. They actually take their paws and nose and lift up on the latch. Odd huh?!? Our St also learned how to open his plastic treat bin and he'd eat all of the treats out. We thought it was raccoons until I caught him doing this. :o)

My dog can like his own balls. If i was that intelligent to find a way to do it, life would be so much more fun.
