Thank you for this question.
There is no cross in the Muslim tradition. I do not know what other religions use a cross like symbol. I have seen crosses, although not representing the cross of the crucifixion, on some native people's religious articles. I think those represent the four directions but I am not sure.
The crescent and star were not identified with Islam until the Ottoman empire. There is no "official" symbol of Islam as Islam prohibits the worshiping of anything other than Allah (swt) and symbols can easily become idols. However for the rest of the world the star and crescent have come to represent Islam.
The Star and Crescent signifies concentration, openness and victory, as well as sovereignty and divinity. According to tradition, in 339 BC a brilliant waxing moon save Byzantium (now Istanbul) from attack by Philip of Macedon. To mark their gratitude, the citizens adopted the Crescent of Diana as the city's emblem. When the city became the Christian Constantinople in 330 AD, its Crescent assumed the significance of an attribute of the Virgin Mary.
In 1299, conquering what is now Turkey, Sultan Osman had a vision of a crescent moon stretching over the world; it thus became a symbol of the Ottoman dynasty, and when Constantinople fell to Muhammad II in 1453, the crescent came to represent both Islam and the Turkish empire. The star was added by Sultan Selim III in 1793 (its five points being established in 1844).

Byzantium was saved from Macedonian troops (under Philip) trying to tunnel in at night during a siege because the crescent moon was shining. They thus erected a statue of Diana, goddess of the moon, whose statues frequently showed her with a crescent moon. This simply remained during the Christian era (as Constantinople) and Muslim (as Istanbul), and spread to the rest of the Ottoman/Muslim world. The legend that Suleiman saw the horns of the crescent moon encompassing the whole world is likewise post facto (or else the crescent would be open to the bottom).
And Allah knows best
Peace and Blessings,
Salim

The Muslims use the crescent moon. The cross is an ancient symbol that predates Christianity by several thousand years. It has a variety of forms, including the swastika. Today, it is associated almost exclusively with Christianity.

I don't believe that the cross symbolizes Christianity. The cross is a symbol of Certain PARTS of Christianity! There are a lot of branches of Christianity that do not use the cross as a symbol, i.e. Jehovah's Witnesses.

I don't believe that Muslims have a cross because they don't believe that Jesus was the Messiah. They are still waiting for their Messiah to come for the first time. I believe their symbol is a half moon and star which represents their beliefs.

Cross is for Christians.
Crescent is for Muslims.
When u think of it , you will find that's kinda like the signs that the famous brands of cars have.
Like Mercedes has a circle with three lines in the middle , BMW has its own sign .
I wonder what atheists have ?
