Bath is lovely. Roman Baths are a really nice place to visit and there are some nice shops/restaurants there.

Brighton is a year round destination, but the best times for a weekend away are May (during the month-long festival) the height of summer, early autumn and in the run up to Christmas. Found out where you want to go, and what you want to do, then hop on a train and take yourself there. It's a very memorable destination.

York, it has everything!
You can spend you time in the history of the place, just take a walk down the Shambles and all those Castles, etc.
What about shopping? More than you'll ever need right on your doorstep with loads of small shops as well as the big names.
Fantastic nightlife, clubs, bars, etc or you can sit in a quite pub overlooking the river.
National train museum is massive and many other museum, the Jorvik centre will teach you all about the Vikings.
There's a Novotel just on the end of the city centre with a great restaurant, it's reasonable to stay there and you can leave your car parked up because everything is walking distance.
I've been many times with various girlfriends as it can be a great romantic getaway, it's easy to get to even including the train or bus.
York really does have it all.

Lake District - cliched but stunning whether you've got the energy to trek up mountains or not. Train to Oxenholme from Euston roughly 70 quid return, then train to Windermere where you'll find B&Bs. In the town centre won't be cheap though.
If you're driving, expect at least 5 hours up the M6 but then at least you can stay slightly away from the tourist hotspots (Kendal?) and get the accomodation costs down a bit. You can always take a tent!!

Whitstable (near Canterbury in Kent) is very fashionable with Londoners on a weekend break right now. In my view it's a bit expensive and would recommend Faversham instead - brewery tours, excellent connections to motorway and train networks, 5 minutes from the seaside.

Anywhere in Cornwall! Tintagel and Boscastle are at the top of the county and fairly easy to reach from the motorway but if you want to go a bit further try Mousehole and Marazion. Newquay and the Eden project are good as well. If we knew where you were starting out from it would be better though!

Brighton - fantastic but can be pricey.
laterooms.com is great for finding availability - the site a bit messy and you often have to phone them at the end of the process but best for finding prices.
(I've also gone direct to hotel after finding availability on here - and it's been cheaper - other times its the other way around).
Exeters nice. Poole and Bournemouth are too and Oxford.
