When painting a knockdown finished interior wall, how do you get a straight line from the wall to the ceiling?

I would recommend you paint the entire room with the lighter of the two colors being used as a primer. Then apply tape to the wall where it meets the ceiling and finish paint the ceiling 1st. This way any splatter on the walls doesn't effect the project. Once that has dried tape the ceiling and do the walls. Use the method described below for best results.

It is best to use a painters tape (blue or green in color), this type of tape should not stick to the drywall and peel off the drywalls top coat paper finish when you remove it.

When you remove the tape after you paint let it dry for a min. of 48 hours to ensure all paint is cured to the surface then peel the tape from the outside edge toward the corner of the wall and ceiling. I have seen when pulled from the corner to the outside edge, it sometimes will pull off the paper finish on the drywall.

I have also seen some of my painters use a hard edge putty knife (wedge it in the corner firmly but not so much as to make an impression) as they remove the tape to ensure it doesn't peel the paint off the opposite surface.

Most painters just do all this by hand, it is a skill that takes years to master. I have done a few of my own projects how I explained it above and the results are fantastic.
