yes, you can. first, you got to configure your external hdd in bios as a hard drive and not a removable media, then restart and boot form the linux cd/dvd. in the linux kernel a lot of drivers are enabled, so you won't have any difficulties. try fedora 5 or suse 10 or 10.1. these are my favorites, and the easiest linuxes
