I think that they are supposed to go to the dentist at the age of 2 for the first visit. My daughter loves to brush her teeth. she has a barney and a minnie mouse toothbrush...which really helps the process. We still use the non flouride toothpaste because she likes to eat it and by not spitting out flouride it stains your teeth...white spots. Anyhow, we sing a silly song...brush em brush em, and then I say uno, dos, tres, on each side, in the front and end on the tongue. First mommy does it, then she gets a turn. She likes to make silly faces in the mirror when she brushes her teeth.
good luck

In the States at least there is a mouthwash type thing for kids that turns all the plaque on your teeth blue. Then they can brush off all the color! Two is too young for this though. Playing games and such is a good idea though. Or take him to the dentist (which you should do ASAP!) and ask the dentist for suggestions.

Make tooth brushing a fun ritual. Play some music. Make up a happy 'tooth time' song. put some strawberry yogurt on with the toothpaste. Reward him with extra 'priveliges' if he agrees each time to brush his teeth. Lead by example. Brush your teeth along with him or her....
He should see a dentist as soon as possible. He should have seen one at 18 months, really....

He is only two year's old he doesn't understand the concept or WHY he should be brushing. YOU need to be there with him to guide him, and as other's have said, get a better tasting toothpaste. Start with the smaller tubes, of several and find out which one he likes. I started my daughter going to the dentist when she was three.

try fun flavored toothpaste and fun shaped brushes.. Dont pressure them or they almost always will be stuborn about it.
Play a game with him. sit him on the vanity in front of the mirror so he can see himself and have a race to see who can bubble up their mouth the fastest.. and pretend you are a monster foaming at the mouth, make all funny sounds etc... See if he can blow a little bubble with a mouth full of toothpaste.. see if he can sing his favorite song whilst brushing.. anything silly that will get him going..... also put a little piggy bank there on the counter and tell him everytime he brushes his teeth, you'll add a penny.. when it gets full (or to predetermined amount) he can buy himself whatever he wants from the local 5 and dime store.

My dentist recommends letting my 2 year old chew on her toothbrush if she would brush or let me brush for her. He said that chewing on the toothbrush is better than nothing.
As for visiting the dentist for a checkup I guess its when you think he'd be able to sit in the chair for the check.
Hope this helps.

Brush your teeth together so he will imitate. I also have the same problem with my 3 yr old. I dont know if you have seen the mouth cancer ad on TV with the woman with the really bad teeth,my son saw it and I told him that happens when you dont brush your teeth. It helped.

you could start by get better tasting toothpaste like crest sparkles....if that doesnt work...
he might be allergic to "sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)" so switch to "mentadent for canker sore prevention" since it does not have SLS. Natural toothpastes like Tom's of Maine have SLS. SLS is a *really really* strong chemical, but we get used to it as adults (well, some do - i never could). Kids have a hard time with it. he probably doesnt want to brush cuz it burns his mouth, but as a 2 year old, it's hard to explain that.
good luck :) i didn't brush my teeth as a kid either cuz the toothpaste burned my mouth so bad - but I didn't figure out why until I was much older!

I use scare tactics on my niece and explain to her that when she eats sweets little monsters eat her teeth and that if she brushes her teeth the monsters go away, and that she must brush her teeth otherwise her teeth will fall out (she is 3)
