I think most of the replys were great, but I want to add...

Obedence train her! The first time she shows her protective side may not always be the best time, or with the right person, and you need to be able to control her in a flash, or snap... she is big! Practice words like "leave it" , Wait", "off" and "stay".

Good luck

First of all, she is very young. Secondly, you do not want her showing her "protective" behavior unless it is appropriate (you actually need protection). Dogs that are aggressive in inappropriate situations usually need to be locked away from people, therefore they aren't around when you really need them. If your dog is confident and polite with people, loves your family and is well-trained then when the need arises she will almost certainly protect you. Besides, just the fact that she is there and she is a rottie is enough to discourage most trouble makers.

I would wait. Has she been in a situation that would bring out the need to protect? I have a Doberman Pinscher that was very docile, & I thought like you...This dog is no better that a mutt!
But put in a dangerous situation, he responded & drove off a couple of bad guys. Your dog is still a puppy. When she gets a little older, you'll probably see a different side of her (especilly around strangers).

Believe me...if she loves you she will be protective of you and your family. I have a Dalmation with no training what so ever and she lets people into our yard but she wont let them out. ( scare the crap out of them and wont rest until I got out and reassure her that things are ok. By the way I have 2 kids of my own and I understand how u feel....Give your puppy time...they will show natural protection in time..if not...adiult dog training classes are available.

Don't worry, I had one and they learn the instinct at around fifteen months. Teach her to be gentle and do exactly what you say, then you won't have to worry she will naturally protect her pack....besides many people are initially afraid of rottys anyway.

Love her and make her part of your family. Then she will be very protective of all of you.
