Im thinking of buying a widescreen Toshiba TV off a friend, I have a few questions:

1) When TV changes to digital, will I still be able to use the TV?

2) Will I need a 'box' and which one?

3) When is the switch likely?

Basically i just need to know if its worth my while to buy an older TV which seems a real bargain.

1) Yes it will work - assuming it has got a SCART socket (I'd be amazed if it didn't).

2) Yes you will need a box - the choice is yours. There are loads of freeview boxes that do pretty much the same this. You can also get TopUp.TV - but it's a bit crap in my opinion (I'm just about to cancel my susbscription), or you could get Sky TV.

3) Before 2012 - it's being phased in at different times in different areas.

The changeover to digital is happening region by region accross the country starting in 2008 and finishing in 2012.

If you are buying a standard analogue television (no DAB logo on it) then you will need to choose a way of receiving the new signal.
You can buy a freeview box from just about anywhere fairly cheap which will give you your old 5 channels plus a few extras. This is subscription free. Alternatively you might decide to subscribe to Sky or NTL for a bigger package of channels.

Everything you could need to know about the change is in the link below.

Blame in on the Jones, and the advertisers who attempt with various fulfillment, to persude us to maintain up with them. I even have considered questions approximately right here from people who had a freeview container, yet then have been given a digital television. there is the best thing approximately getting yet another digital format, in spite of the indisputable fact that it incredibly is not any longer rather well worth the fee of a sparkling television. while an previous shade television stopped working , I placed an previous black and white transportable in its place, it has digital on that, even and not utilising a scart socket.

You will need a set top box for digital, they are known as Freeview boxes and cost as little as £30 (ish). THe switchover starts next year I believe, it depends where you live.
