Cranfield University did a study of smelliest cheeses and picked Vieux Boulogne as having the strongest pong, followed by Port Salut, with Camenbert de Normandie in third place. But they carried out the study on imported cheese which had been refrigerated.
Generally speaking the smelliest cheeses hail from Northern France and when they are ripened naturally and not refrigerated the aroma is overwhelming. The stalls on French markets bear witness to this and there is no need for a university to research it.

Ok I have the worlds smelliest cheese right here, which surprised me, because I had always thought it was english stilton, (which by the way its smell comes from the same bacteria that makes smelly feet!!)

And here we go...

And the winner is... Vieux Boulogne, a soft, pungent cheese from northern France, has topped British researchers' study of the world's smelliest cheese.

i used to work in the cheese industry about 5 years ago.... and i can safely say that gorgonzola is one of the smelliest out there, although some of the other soft blue cheeses can be just as bad - depending on how 'ripe' they are. it seems that the softer the blue cheese is, the more smelly it is......

I think that swiss cheese is the smelliest cheese and it is nasty. I love cheese, but that is one that I can't mess with.

Definitely Stinking Bishop. It really is rank. You can get it from The Teddington Cheese if you fancy - me and my sister bought some, she absolutely loved it (takes after my dad who also liked Bombay Duck can you believe?) but I couldn't get near it without gagging. I dare you xxx
