i like this guy called tom*, i think he knows i like him but so does one of his other mates (whose a girl) who likes him as well.
we sit next to each other in english class (sitting arrangements ), and there use to be this girl sitting in front of us and one day she turned round and said that we should go out, he said no and when she asked him why not he said because he just wouldnt. what does that mean? does it mean that he likes me, because he couldnt make up a reason?

No - it means right there and then he thinks the two of you shouldn't go out.
He might like you but like someone else better.
He might be gay.
He might have been affronted that this girl just confronted him with it in class.
It doesn't mean anything except that if you asked him right there and then to go out, he'd say No.
Give it time. He can change his mind. You can change yours.

mmm....this is an interesting one....I would say that you wouldnt be able to read anything into the answer he gave the girl in front of you. Teenage guys dont wear their heart on their sleeve and he wouldnt give away how he felt in a situation like that with you sitting beside him and being put on the spot like that.
I would suggest that you suss out how he feels about you by trying to chat and have a laugh with him when you are sitting beside him. Use the sitting arrangements to your advantage and try and use this time to crack a joke or two, have some casual chats and see if you get along with him and vice versa. I think it would be a good sign if he smiles and laughs with you.

it means that he just isn't into the other girl and was to nice to hurt her feelings by telling her why. it doesn't however mean that he is into you.
what you need to do is approach him and tell him that you like him and you would like to maybe go out and get to know him better and if he says yes great
and if he says no then you will know where you stand with him and you will be able to move on and get over him

or he could be embarrased by being asked so fowardly and by another person other than yourself , i have a freind that ,that has happened to and he never persued it because he felt foolish ,hough the both of them really wanted to , they met years later and confessed and both felt very foolish and regretted it ever since

not necessarily, it may just be that he didn't like the girl that asked him out, he doesn't need a reason. play your cards right, and i'm sure you'll have him eating outta your hands in no time!!
