In the mid-seventies we were all warned that the oil was a finite resource and we should conserve it. It was called "The Energy Crisis" Now I am told that we use too much of it and in 100 years we will all die due to climate change.
What happened to the oil running out? How do we suddenly have so much?

And before that, following the severe, long lasting winter of 1962/63 we were assured that a new ice age was imminent. Then, as you say, in the 1970's we were told that oil would run out within 15 to 20 years. Now we are informed that the world is going to suffer irreversibly from 'global warming'.
No wonder the ordinary citizen is so cynical about government pronouncements. Most of us see these reports as an excuse for extracting more taxes from each of us, whether rich or poor - but the poorest will pay the most in terms of their available income. And into which category do members of the government fall? The richest, of course! So any stringent measures they impose will not affect them to any great degree. Bring on the revolution, I say!

Well it stands to reason that oil is a finite resource and must one day be depleted.
However I think it is sometimes used as a political lever to distract people's attention from more embarrassing government failures - much the same as the current talk about climate change and global warming. It gives the politicians something else to talk about - a breathing space.
For these reasons I am not going to worry about it.

If you look at the consumption figures for oil versus production - you will see that while we are years away from "running out" - we are close to Peak Oil - ie when consumpttion matches production. After that demand will outstrip supply - leading to a surge in prices.

Remember the energy crisis was brought about by a drop in supply of about 5-10% - and look at the chaos caused.
