honestly, it depends on the person...
a cage fighter can be a martial artist.
a martial artist is one who learns the art, traditions and history. is honorable, humble and respectful, not only of their art but of others. martial artist compete in tournaments etc. but always look at their art as their primary concern, and excelling in it as their ulitmate goal.
cage fighter tend to learn martial arts as a means to an end.. they aren't concerned with tradition, humility etc. they just want to learn how to fight..
but if you have a mma instructor who's 1st priority is to turn their fighters into respectful martial artists, then yes, a cage fighter can be a martial artist.
my husband teaches mma fighter. and although he is not a 'traditionalist', he still tries his best to instill values, respect and humility into the young men he trains. he says even though they are learning to fight in the cage that they will not dispairage the art that he has spent his whole life learning and they will walk in there with the humility and respect of a true martial artist, not a thug ready to throw down..
those are the differences between martial artists and cage fighter. what makes one or the other is not the student but the teacher.
hope that answers your question...

Well most of the time a cage fighter is also a martial artist, however, an average martial artist is not always a cage fighter. There are still many potential differences between an average martial artist and a cage fighter most notably with the attitude.
The normal martial artist usually posesses different characteristics than a cage fighter. A cage fighter may be insecure, hungry: an inquiring mind constantly trying to figure out what exactly he is. The problem is that they may be searching for their entire lives. There are many different types of cage fighters obviously and the wanderer is only a few types.
There is of course the one that thrives on competition, but this is still rooted somewhere within his own insecurity. There is always the combatant that just wishes to destroy others for his own satisfaction. This may also be rooted within his own insecurity.
A self-defense expert lives in a completely different world and most likely understands more about himself.

Yes and No
A martial artist learns all aspects of the art, and trains them equaly. That means the mind and body... They learn the teachings of the masters before them and apply it to the knowlage that they have today. MOST belive that fighting is a last resort and should next to never be used.
A cage fighter CAN be a martial artist. And it depends on what type of cage fighting you are talking about. Real bad ***, mean stuff? or the UFC sport style boxing/wrestling. A cage fighter is someone who has simply used the martial side of their art to showcase skill in the cage. It is soley the brute end of the stick.
Both can be the same... understand?

A lot. A cage fighter fights because he wants to. A martial artist only fights when he has to.

Cage fighter/martial arts that competition hard (grappling, Muay thai, boxing, etc...) are the true martial artists who really take care of themselve, work out hard, push themselve to do the best they could at everything, and want to evolve their art and bring it to next level and make it more effective.
A martial artist who practice but never spar full contact against a live resisting opponent, do only form, go to gym for a hour and rush home so they can watch their favorite television program, and list goes on aren't a true martial artists. They're basically a role player, dancer, or actor/actress.

Cage fighting is just full resistance sparring against someone you don't know. Depending on your opinion, a cage fighter is/can be a martial artist.

Martial artists are people who seriously study martial arts to enhance their lives, bodies, minds, and spirits. They do not necessarily care about learning it to be able to fight for sport, but may diesire it for self defense.
Cage fighters may or may not be in the martial arts for life improvement but like the sport of fighting and train to those ends.
Either one can train just as hard and seriously as the other.

i think anyone who takes fighting seriously, in their training, in their daily choices (diet, drinking, smoking etc.) and in their personal philosophy or outlook is a martial artist. so, someone who learns karate but does none of these things would not be a martial artist. someone with no formal training who did all those things would be.
so you could be a cage fighter martial artist, or a cage fighter who's not. you could be a kung fu student who's not a martial artist, or a kung fu cage fighter who isn't either. it's all in how you live your life. labels come from outside......just my 2 cents.
