West Sussex, no question about it. Close to ancient forests, the Downs, South Downs Way (walking trail), miles of beaches, M23 and M25 within easy reach, Heathrow is about 50 minutes away and Gatwick is about 20 minutes away. The train takes about 30-45 minutes into London Bridge or Victoria. Jobs are plentiful at Gatwick, or at various business centres in the area, or by commuting to London. Also easy access to the Continent by ferry or Chunnel.

I don't know what the schools are like or the work situation but for countryside and scenery, you can not get better than Cornwall especially right down the end. Sennen cove is one of the most beautiful beaches i have ever been to, the coast line around Lands End is breathtaking and you have lovely little places like Mousehole,Marazion and St Michael's mount and St Ives to visit. All in all, simply the most stunning place in the UK. And just in case you are wondering, No i don't live there but i will one day! (or on the Isles of Scilly which are just as beautiful but a bit more remote)

This is going to be entirely subjective really. What work do you want? what sort of school and what type of countryside. I live in Derby and it's great. 2 hours from just about anywhere in England, good schools, agonising football team and right next to the most beautiful scenery in England. Actually there is a good places to live survey which places Alnwick in Northumbria as the best town in the country, but you would possibly need an interpreter to start with

No question: East Lothian in Scotland.
Miles of beautiful beaches, hills and trees, beautiful little country towns, castles, good weather (hardly ever rains because it's on the east coast) and all within half an hour of the centre of Edinburgh. Some really good schools, too, particularly in North Berwick.
The quality of life here is amazing. You'd be very welcome!

Wakefield is a great city and that's extra probable that childrens have been evacuated FROM there incredibly than TO. it would count on which city/city babies have been evacuated from as to the place they could be sent - babies from London could be sent to Kent/Sussex/Hampshire etc, babies from the Yorkshire cities to the North York Moors and Dales and do on.

It all depends on what you can afford and what you like as far as surrounding countryside is concerned.

Devon, apparently, comes out on top as far as combining everything is concerned.
