I heard somewhere that $40,000/year is the magic number. If you are below this, you struggle to put food on the table and meet your basic needs. However, as you rise above this number, you have different problems. You still always want things just above what you can afford. For example, if you can afford a modest house in a nice neighborhood, then you want a bigger house in a better neighborhood. If you can afford the bigger house in the better neighborhood, then you begin to want the fancy house in the rich neighborhood. And so on and so on. I think this is just human nature. Some people would say it's just greed, but I really believe that if you bought someone everything they ever wanted, the they would begin to want new things.
I also think this has something to do with the way we look at others around us. When I look at my friends, one of them goes on a vacation of some sort almost every month. Another friend throws big dinner parties all the time. Another owns a condo at a ski resort. Another just bought a $500,000 brand new home. Now when I look at my friends in the general sense, I sort of feel like they all have what I want (but cannot afford). But when I think of each individual friend, I realize that they don't have everything. The friend that owns the ski resort condo lives in a pretty modest house. The vacationers don't really own much of anything else. They never buy anything new. Everyone kind of just buys what's really important to them and then just wishes they had the money to buy the next thing on thier list. I would imagine that even if you had $5 million, you would have the same problem--only your wants would just be bigger.

That is a question that should be left for each individual person. For everyone that answer is going to different. For me, to be able to sit down and pay all my bills and be able to provide for my family without so much difficulty would be the right amount. For me that would relieve much stress in life. For most families it is hard to make ends meet.
They do say that the more you have the more you spend. And they also say that your lifestyle depends on how much money you have.

Just enough to pay my monthly bills, put a little in the bank for a rainy day & to save for retirement. Meet friends for lunch and/or dinner a couple of times a month & a week's vacation once a year. And enough to buy a few gifts for two nieces & two nephews for their birthdays and Xmas. That's it.

As the saying goes Money is the root of all evil. As long as my children have clothes on there back, food in there stomach, and a roof over there head that is all that matters. I know we all sit back and say if I had the money I would do such and such.

I'm relatively happy now, but it would be nice to own our house outright, and have enough cash to renovate to what we really want. I'd say $250,000 Aus. Dollars, with a nice holiday after all the renovating!

Money doesn't create happiness can't you understand that? It comes from within. People with tons of money still commit suicide and have addictions to battle, so I rest my case.

i need about $2,000.00 at the moment and i would feel EXTATIC. I need to pay rent ($450.00) in about 2 weeks and the power bill (~$300.00) and the cable bill (~$100.00) and i have ~$600.00 in medical bills to pay. I would buy some groceries and my son a birthday present and then i would be happy.

Enough to live on. Food, water, electricity, internet. Nothing else. So I guess, less than $5000 a year.
