Christmas is supposed to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; however, his birth was not originally in December. No specific dates can be known but here are the facts that i can tell you:
Jesus was born somewhere in the late Summer months of August or September. The story of his birth of the Shepherds being in the fields at night, it would have been too cold in December for the Shepherds or the flocks to be outside in the winter months. Not only that, but a bright and shining star could be seen from every place on Earth which can be traced back to a celestial (ie Astronomical) occurence that happened during these months as well.
The whole celebrating Christmas in December was a push from the Catholic Church because there were many roman/druid/pagan holidays that were celebrated in the month of december. With the Catholic Church's integration of the entire world to Christianity they took rituals from other religions to make the transition from "pagan" to Christian an easier pill to swallow. For example, Christmas trees (evergreen) were originally a sign of fertility in pagan rituals during the months of december. The evergreen was integrated into the Christian Holiday to have pagans integrated into Christianity more easily, and thus it has been forgotten about and is a normal Holiday decoration for everyone since. (A similar story/situation is true for both Halloween, which is why all Saints Day is the very following day, and Easter with the rabbits and the eggs...it was all integration for the early Catholic Church when they were taking over the world)
Hope this answers your question, and maybe some questions you didn't even know that you had!

Christmas was taken from the Pagans. Christians say it's supposed to be about Christ's birth, but he wasn't actually born anywhere near December 25.

Christmas is about when Jesus was found at a Walmart, and so to celebrate, we refuse to fund our schools and cut our taxes so we can buy heaps of plastic crap at Walmart and then complain kids aren't learning anything. Joseph has to pay his taxes too, and that's when Jesus came along. Even though Mary was tight as a tick and about to deliver, the rich in the Inn made her and Joseph have the baby in a stable.
