Not all muslims mourn this event. FOR EXAMPLE I DO NOT!
Also I DO NOT COMMEMORATE THE BIRTH OF THE PROPHET EITHER AS it is not SUNNAH.

Moharram is the first month on Islamic calendar and in Islamic there is no sad day because all muslims should be optimistic.We should try hard to make a better life.Today should be better than yesterday and tomorrow should be better than today.Allah will not change our destiny as long as we do not try hard to make it better.Moharram is included in the 4 sacred months.In Karballa most muslims make an commemorsation of a sad day in Moharram when,Hussein the grandchild of Muhammad pbuh was killed..But this commemoration is not exactly a sad month for muslims all over the world.we muslims in Indonesia do not commemorate it at all.We commemorate the birthday of Muhammad pbuh every year.

Because in the 10th of Muharram,Hussain Bin Ali was killed by Yazid Bin Muawiyah.Hussain Bin Ali is the Prophet Muhammad PBUH grandson.The Syiah celebrate this day to remember this sad event.

As a Christian who know s about Islam as well
must to say there is a group of Muslim s who called SHITTE or Shieah that are sad in this month because they say that the secound son (not the first one) of Imam Ali (the first leader after Mohammad), wich was imam Hussain, has killed in 10th of this month by another group of muslims who didnt want to follow him.
The most of Shitte (Shiyah ) muslims are living in Iran (70 %) and after that in Iraq, Afghanistan , Syriaand ...
They have 12 and some of them 6(Syrians) Imams after Mohammad the prophet
Imam means religiuos leader for them
And as you said it happend in Carballa wich is a city in Iraq.

Grand Son of Prophet Muhammad(pbuh), Hazrat Imam Husain and his family has been murdered in Karballa.
But Muharram is also other significant in History.

Muslims are sad in Muharram because grand son {Hazrat Hussain (along with his whole family)} of their Prophet got killed (shaheed) in this month.

I am a Muslim, I have never been sad in a particular month of day as part of my religion.
Is karballa is more sad day than the day our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) day of death?
No one could be equal to HIM whatsoever.

that is simply ignorance in action.
it is not prescribed in Islam, by the Prophet (p) or any of his companions. it is an innovation and condemned in Islam.

Sunni muslims do not do this it is the shia's that do this we sunnis do not mourn or harm our self as you should not mourne for the dead like this as it is bad for the dead
